Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
He is my little love. He is such a good boy and the cutest lil bugger you ever saw. I rescued him 3 years ago. I knew he had heart disease when I adopted him. They said he was only 4 - but I think he is probably older. I give him Young at Heart by Pet Wellbeing for his heart and, Dandelion leaf as a diuretic. Today we started him on heart medicine. I'm heart broken. I know poms are prone to some heart diseases. He has leaking valves on both sides of his heart. I do notice when I put Hemp oil on his dinner he seems to do a little better. I'm looking for a miracle. This lil guy means the world to me. Any suggestions? Any success stories out there? My lil doggies are by my side 24 hours a day. We do everything together.

My dog has an enlarged heart. She was diagnosed over a year ago and I did not want to put her on heart meds. So I went online and researched and found fiveleafpetbotanicals.com. She is doing very well on it. She is a super finicky shitzu mix so I have to blend up her doses of herbs and squirt it gently into her mouth. Anything that spills out she laps up. They send you a squirter thingy but I found more on Amazon(sorry) and got back up just in case. I mix the blend they give you with celery juice. Celery juice is a diuretic and helps relieve fluid build up in the lungs. You want to mix it so it is not too runny and not too thick. Also if your dog can tolerate a bit of raw I think it would be helpful.Maggie my dog will eat it sometimes but there has to be kibble involved also. She is 13 so I give her a break. She is going for walks in the mornings but rests a lot during the day. If I can squeeze out a few more years...woohoo! Good luck. Check out that site. The instructions are very good. Hope this helps.

I hear ya! I did't want to put him on heart meds either. I give him Young at Heart - by pet Wellbeing, CoQ10, Dandelion leaf, Heart Health, Hemp oil and Salmon oil. Danelion leaf is also a natural diuretic. So far he is not retaining water, but it could be because of the danelion root. I hope you lil one continues to do well on regime. I will check out that site. Thank you!

Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
I have an excellent herbalist book, and Hawthorn (thorn apple) tea is recommended for strengthening the heart.

The leaves can be made into a tonic-tea, and the flowers and berries can be separately tinctured and mixed into a 50-50 blend.

The only problem would be using the tincture blend in addition to chemical heart medicine, as it could change the effects of what the vet gives you or over-the-counter drugs.

The leaf tea is much milder, but I would still hesitate on giving it with any pharma prescriptions, just like all herbal medicines.

I have tried the leaf tea and it is wonderful, just steep a few leaves for about 15 minutes for more pep and vigor. It is a general cardiac invigorater.

It is a rule of thumb among herbalists to go all natural or don't go at all alongside mainstream medicines and pills.

I am a dog angel, and will pray for your little guy to live and love with you for years to come!

Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
I had a cat with cardiomegaly.
He would be playing, and suddenly get weak. Panting. His paw pads would sweat and go clammy.
Just like allele having a heart attack.

They wanted to do all these tests, put him on meds etc etc.
That stressed him even worse.

I spoke to an herbalist. She gave me these pills I would crush up and put into a 2 ounce dropper bottle.
Id give him one dropper full a day.. I also supplemented his food with vitamins. C, B etc.

He never had another attack again. After about 6 months, I stopped the herbal pills to see how he would do without them.
He was status quo. Never had another attack.

He lived to be 14. He died suddenly one night of what seemed to be a stroke. He started to cry, had 2 seizures and died in my arms.

Was never sick a day in his life in between.

Thank you! I'm glad your kittuns went on to live a healthy life. I think I get some doggy vitamin C. Did you know our pets make their vitamin C from the sun? It's like we make vitamin D from the sun.

Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
So sorry, my dog too was on Lasix, Vetmedin and Enalapril. I also gave him CBD, dandelion, hawthorn.

My dog was a large Pomeranian as well, about 15 pounds about 12 years old.

He was diagnosed in January 2019.

It is a difficult decision to continue treatment.

For our walks I would end up carrying him back home.

I too thought I was feeding him the very best food.

I think our cat knew something was wrong right away. The dog would sleep on the carpeted floor in the winter(instead of on the bed or sofa). And the cat would then sleep on the floor with him. My cat never sleeps on the floor. Plus our cat would sleep with her back to our dog's back touching.

*****Warning...Heartbreaking decision following....

Honestly, five months later in April 2019, my adult child was holding the dog & laying on the floor. The dog started yelping in a way I have never heard from any animal. He then peed on my son. We made the decision right then & there. Knowing what I know now & what I experienced, I would have done it sooner. For me HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL. Animals do not know how to tell us they are suffering. Again I am so sorry.

Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
We lost our beloved Biewer terrier last June. We tried everything to save him and we are still devastated. We now have two precious puppies of the same breed, but we still miss him dearly. He had an enlarged heart and several other things, including Pulmonary Hypertension. If you hear those words uttered, things are bad. I really don’t know if it was related to the enlarged heart or not. CBD oil seems to ease many ailments.

They started putting him on oxygen. When this all started we did not realize that there were options for oxygen treatment at home. We finally got a setup together towards the end, but he was too far gone. If they ever start putting your dog in an oxygen tent/cage send me an email and I can give you details on the equipment.

Re: Looking for Advice for Pomeranian with Advanced Enlarged Heart
I came across something very interesting and promising for some dogs.

[link to bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com (secure)]

In a study some dogs prevented or prolonged the development of heart valve disease with diet. One dog even reversed his valve disease from severe to mild. The important nutrients are fish oil, MCT oil, vitamin E, Magnesium, Taurine and a few others.
