train is so much more comfortable, cheaper and faster
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78823193

Trains suck too, just not as bad. If one is heading to the sticks, eventually they'll have to hop a bus but at least it won't be for days or at least it shouldn't. chuckle

Re: ever taken a greyhound bus across country{USA}? looking for advice
I did it on a train once back in the ‘90s when I was in college. Told myself I would never do it again. My recollection is that it killed my back sitting so long. Make sure to get up and move every chance you get. Maybe try to eat less and take some imodium so you don’t have to crap much (I do this on extended hiking trips). Brings some Advil. Good luck!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79573645

Me too. The seat was extremely uncomfortable for me. I wished I’d brought a lumbar support pillow and one for my neck.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51118115

Both on buses and trains, I've had the experience of some loud mouth talking and talking and talking and never shutting up. You might be able to move on the train but you're stuck on the bus.
Also train food....it's indescribable, and not in a good way

Re: ever taken a greyhound bus across country{USA}? looking for advice
I will never take a bus again. 36 hours from Detroit to Tampa. Lots of stops and changing buses. Just when you fall asleep, you have to wake up and change buses. I got stuck next to an immigrant worker coming from working in the fields. Literally smelled like he crapped in the field and just left the shit stuck in his crack. One hour of that awful smell. I had a fear of flying before that bus trip. That trip literally cured my fear of flying. I fly everywhere now.

Re: ever taken a greyhound bus across country{USA}? looking for advice
Don't do it.

Seriously. You will probably regret it forever.

Many people taking buses, especially greyhound, are very low class and have poor hygiene. And you are stuck smelling them and in some cases listening to them shriek/cackle/bluster loudly for hours.

The seats can be uncomfortable for 6 hours at a time and you have no where to walk or stretch.

Then there are the schedule mistakes, delays between stops where you are stuck in a crappy bus station in the middle of nowhere with only vending machines for hours and hours.

You WILL experience these things cross country, whereas taking a 5-8 hour trip between a couple states you can get lucky and have an uneventful trip.

Rent an RV, or try an auto drive-away transport service. Puts you in charge and you don't have to deal with the riff raff.

Do not leave anything on the bus for extended periods, especially if there is any chance there may be a transfer for any reason.. thieves!
You can't take it with you - anyway.

Done similar several times. Met some cool people, and some jerks.

Make sure you take a snack supply, the time between stops can be interminable.

Also, make sure you have a good powerbank to keep your cell (and any other devices) charged up.

Another vote for Amtrak. I went from NY to Chicago on Greyhound and it was horrible. Took forever, had a well meaning (homeless?) guy put his coat over me when I was sleeping..I woke up gagging from the smell and I know he was only trying to be nice. :( I love babies, but 36 hours straight of tag team baby crying is like watching the movie 'Eraserhead' on autoloop. Then there were the stops where the bathroom lines were so long you never knew if you would make it back in time to get back on. Gah..no way.

Amtrak was cheaper and nicer. The bathrooms were way better, seats more comfy, cars more climate controlled. It was quiet at night.

Now this was some years ago (2000 approx.) and a gal friend of mine travelled from New Jersey to Colorado and she said it was the worst experience she'd ever had and would not do it again. I think she flew home.
Her biggest complaint was noise and non-stop screaming kids the whole length of the trip.

Re: ever taken a greyhound bus across country{USA}? looking for advice
hi everyone. i am potentially going to be taking a bus from northern california to boston, some time from april to early june. one plus side to the pandemic is, i wont have to sit next to some sweaty fat person, or a drunk crazy person... because of social distance.

im pissed i wont be abe to smoke weed for 4 days so i plan to pack a bunch of THC gummies in my carry on, and probably some valerian capsules to help with sleep.

ive taken a greyhound across a ew states before but it was nothing compared to what this trip will be. we're talking 4 days, possibly 5 if the layovers/ transfers take longer(which they will).

if anyone has done this; gone across country in a bus.... what should i expect? any advice is highly appreciated! im kinda worried about it but i have a lot of good things waiting back in boston that i need to get to.
 Quoting: Plato II

Be careful not to befriend anyone on your ride. I had a girl who I thought was really nice strike up a conversation with me, then sit next to me, only to steal my ticket out of my bag.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79320453

Good advice. I always wear a one of those cloth wallet money things where I keep my real money and passport. Wear it near the front on your waist where you can make sure it's there.

Don't keep much money in your wallet or your credit cards either, so if you do get robbed you won't lose much. You will fall asleep from time to time so sit on any valuables. You get the picture

real ballers keep a locked safety deposit box with them while traveling and it doesnt leave their posession. then for personal documents and cash/cards. you have basically a fanny pack strapped across your chest, worn inside the shirt. its designed to not buglge out and be worn to one side of your belly. that way if youre muggred, nothing happens yo ubeat the fuck out of the mugger and walk away.

since i am not a baller, i will improvise.

Yeah I did, well Atlantic City to Milwaukee anyway
Even back then, the big city bus stations were DANGEROUS
I was carry a bear knife in shoulder sheath under my
denim jacket ... lots of pockets. Youre going to need
them

On the way back ... I had a great experience, A dancer,
looked like Jennifer Beals, was going to NYC and wanted
my companionship for the ride. Unfortunately platonic,
but all night long ride in a snowstorm, with my cassette
deck and headphones playing Jeff Becks Guitar Shop,
Zeppelins Going to California and Santana;s Samba Pa Ti
over and over while she snuggled and slept on me.

Thanks OP ,,, I havent thought about that in a long,
long time

btw ive been in terrifying psych wards as well as max security prison before so maybe my naive nature is betraying my better reasoning. its possible im a bit tougher skinned than some of you, yet not having an adult like judgement skillset due to being an aspie.

i.e. you guys are probably freaking out for no reason. i can deal with pretty fucked up environments.. it will be fine.

worried about scale
0-terrorist threats/covid
1-drunk people
then basically for 2 through 9 theres nothing because i dont give a fuck as long as i have weed and headphones

then
10- having to wear a mask for a week straight and not shower. thats cringy a.f.

could give a rats ass about some nefarious persons... i will destroy them on contact. its the things you cant plan for that im concerned about.
