Well, a certain generation who may not be named sent all the unskilled manufacturing jobs overseas, leaving an employment vacuum behind. Not everyone is cut out to be a doctor, lawyer, scientist, or software engineer, and not everyone is cut out for trades, either. Something I find interesting is the trend amongst the older crowd to rag on young adults working in retail and services when, before the late 90s, that's what most adults did their entire lives. Degreed office workers were the exception, not the norm. |

Both are making more than 12 an hour and get "covid hazard pay", which her father and I, who are nurses at the local hospital, do not get. They save every penny they earn. This is how we all started out ... Nobody "aspires" to be a lifeguard or work in a deli but sometimes people have bills that need to be paid. I don't think "lack of skills" should mean that grown adults are stripped of their autonomy, being forced to rent a bedroom in a 4 or 5 BR house in order to make ends meet. When I was in HS I worked at a movie theater and most everyone I worked with were grown adults who had been working there for 10+ years. I see nothing wrong with maintaining a low skill/low pay job if that's all you need to stay afloat. |
