Okay, I have some family. They're a nasty bunch who have a reputation for being users. They have a huge double standard wrt their behavior and are widely disliked. Quite some time ago, I got sick of it and left them. Now they want me back, not so much because they have any feelings for me, or ever did, but because of their belief that I belong to them and I have no right to have left.

So I'm getting a barrage of guilt trips and malicious treatment, along with whiny protests about overinflated 'sins' which are as usual judged on the basis of the previously-mentioned double standard. They even interpret living on my own terms while at the same time considering the needs of others as something 'selfish' because their ad hoc needs are the only ones that have ever counted. Life isn't truly horrible yet, I want to enjoy it while I can without them around, and they repeatedly threaten to destroy it, and have in the past.

What should I do? I don't think they are ever going to change, and so they are always going to be marginal, peripheral and in danger, and it seems a lot of people before me have already decided it's not their problem.
