There were not plenty of masks back then. The reason they told you they were not needed was there was a shortage and they wanted to hoard the supply for doctors and nurses. I gave a few of my Ebola N95s from 2014 to a nurse friend last March, and you would have thought I dropped a bag of gold on her front porch. They had been reusing masks for weeks already.

I am in this business. The N-95 are typically 3-layer polyethylene fiber sandwiched by polypropylene. They are not even remotely biodegradable. Oops.
