The Elk and Buffalo would literaly stand in front of the Volcano eating and get coated in volcanic ash. Haven't you ever seen fossils? They can' tell when a Volcano is going to erupt.

I drove that corridor on I-15 less than 2 weeks ago. I saw Elk as well as Elk carcasses north of Pocatello. There was no game fence to keep them off the interstate. It's not a normal migration route across I-15 or they would have game fencing up. It is the Snake River plain and edge of craters of the moon and that does border on winter range for Elk. Idaho D O T needs to drop some coin on fences there. You cant have 700lb animals running around on a major artery with vehicles flying by at 80mph.

Elk rut in September. They are getting ready to calve. The area is rather "Elkie"
but the migration is more dictated by weather an snow depth at elevation. We had a very mild winter until February on the west side of the Rockies. Very little snow. So the stretch of I-15 they are getting hit on is unfenced and the elk arent usually right on the freeway there.
