Van Der Merwe —who has killed as many as 500 animals including lions, leopards and elephants — said she posted the sickening photo to taunt the animal rights lobby.

“I have no respect for them – I call them the mafia,” she told the Mirror as she recounted the couple’s dream trip to the resort of Sun City.

A friend call to alert her that her dream kill was spotted at the game park.

“I’d waited years for my own perfect bull – the older a bull gets the darker he gets,” she told the outlet. “I love the skin and the fact it’s such an iconic animal for Africa.

“Our plans changed quickly. My wonderful husband Gerhardt knew this was my dream. I was like a child for two weeks, counting the days. Afterwards I was flooded with emotions,” she gushed.

It looks like a trend, they love posing with their hearts...

Well, I can understand the Valentines day one, for one simple reason.

Posing with a heart. Valentines day is all about hearts and this hunt was a gift from her husband.

So in that sense, logic is encompassed within the irony of the occasion.

That being said, if it is a trend, based upon the second example you show, it isn't a new one. I should expect people to know this.

From the biggest fish story, to the littlest mouse caught in a trap, people have been doing this type of thing back to antiquity.

Someone's prowess as a hunter has always been regarded as a good thing in every era. I see no reason why it shouldn't continue to be the case now, today.

Is the woman a narcissist? Idk.

We all have unique upbringing values and experience in this life, and with everyone sharing, it creates a wealth of opinion on how people should live as a general basis.

It is what it is, and has always been.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. hf

I was out hunting white tail deer and came across a heart that size laying in the road.

Turns our someone who had drawn a once in a life time moose tag, got their moose and left the heart along with the lungs and offal pile for the ravens.

Hunting white tail, I came upon a bull moose once laying in the grass. Before I saw it, I could hear it's heartbeat, standing nearly 20 yards from it.

I was with my ex at the time and she was with me. When it stood up and looked at us, she began to panic, lol, because we had closed the distance to about 10 yards before getting eyes on it and she was freaked about it's size and being so close.

Not only could you hear the heart beat, but you could FEEL it!

After it stood up, we slowly back away to a safer distance and it turned slowly and casually walked off the other way.

I can tell you on thing though, legal tag or not, I would have shot it if it had charged us, without hesitation, as a defensive measure. Moose can be very aggressive, or equally nonchalant.

It absolutely pisses me off when they bed down on my land during deer season. They are territorial and drive the deer off and other than throwing rocks at them, there isn't much I can do.

I did think about calling the game warden and telling him to get his damned tagged moose off of my land....

Wow! Is that strong their heartbeats? That’s very impressive...

If those animals are killed for sport money the locals just cull them... Same with lions.
Don't blame the hunters blame the dumb africans for never progressing!

from the article.

She specifically picked one that was to be culled.

it almost certainly did. I don't understand the outrage over legal, above-board hunts. The revenue generated from them goes to fight the actual villains, which are the poachers.

Africans are corrupt as hell. They still let poachers poach. That’s why African lions and elephants are dwindling in numbers.

This is absolutely disgusting.

I hunt and fish, but I am in no way a so-called sportsman. I do not hunt and fish for sport, but for sustenance. Killing animals merely for the sake of killing them is terribly wrong. Unless they are a threat to us, or we need them for food, they should be left alone to live out their little lives.

Sport killing, like trophy-taking or catch-and-release fishing (most fish die afterwards from the stress and hook injury) should be banned, as it is cruel and unnecessary; I say that having been an outdoorsman for over 50 years.

I don't really understand why anyone would want to shoot giraffes for "sport" either, but take a step back and look at the situation here, things aren't as bad as it seems.

Wealthy people pay out their asses to get a trophy kill.

The meat feeds poor locals.

And the money goes to wildlife preservation efforts, like paying guards to keep the animals from being poached to extinction.

The REASON they let people pay to kill a few animals, is because they NEED the money to save the rest of them. And the animals to be killed are carefully selected, in this case it was an elderly giraffe that had seen its best days. A giraffe that led a full free giraffe life ended its life as food for poor people who really need the protein, and its demise helped protect all the other giraffes. What's so disgusting about that?

Contrast the life of this giraffe with the short and unnatural life led by the cow that became the hamburger you ate last week.

It's her money, just as your money is your money. If someone wants your money, they have to offer you a "product" you want to buy.

When someone offers the "product" of creating jobs in Africa, building schools there, or doing other good deeds, that is called "operating a charity".

Charities exist. Plenty of them, in fact. Anyone who wants to buy their "product" can do so, and many do.

But guess what, the "product" of saving animals in the savannah doesn't attract enough buyers. There aren't enough donations to charities dedicated to the purpose to keep the animals safe.

So they came up with a scheme of selling another "product" - the thrill of shooting a great animal, and the right to take home pelts or horns or something as a trophy. And this "product" attracted plenty of wealthy customers, who were willing to pay a lot for it. Enough to save the animals.

Whether trophy hunting is moral or immoral is actually rather irrelevant. The point is that it serves a useful purpose in this case.

If people were donating enough money to save the animals without allowing trophy hunting, then it wouldn't be needed. But they don't. For example, I haven't donated a nickel to saving African animals in the past, and I have no real intention of donating a nickel in the future either. I have other concerns and priorities. That's just how it is.

How much have you donated to this cause?

The paradox is, the borderline psychopathic people who derive pleasure and pride from killing animals do more to save them than the rest of us. So hold back the judgment, maybe?

So you are going to bring the bible in on this? Are you going to have a sh*t eatin' grin on your face as she does as well? And, last, your "personal" beliefs? I don't think anyone here is interested in being a histrionic sociopath.

I voiced my belief and opinion.

It isn't misplaced or wrong, just because you don't agree with it.

I would shoot and eat a Giraffe. You bet! I also wouldn't have any remorse or ill feelings about doing it.

I already eat beef and venison. A Giraffe is simply another food alternative in that class, I would opt for consumption of, if I had the opportunity.

You know what---you are right. You can do what you want and that is you right and opinion. It is just hard for me to imagine anyone actually in the USA that has to hunt for food. Unless they get a "kick" from the sport of it. I just cannot imagine putting an end to a creature's life when the new testament tells us what Jesus himself ate and drank. I get that a fish is a life as well, but you were the one bringing the bible into it. Can't remember a time when Jesus was smiling a big grin in front of His disciples about the cow, deer, or giraffe He bagged.

Nothing wrong with killing an animal for food, even if other food is available on the market. There is no law that says you must get your food from a store, restaurant or supermarket.

I eat what I kill. That hasn't always been the case. I use to shoot rabbits, birds, gophers and squirrels as a kid just for the sport of it with my friends.

I clubbed a porcupine to death once and sold it to a fellow who used the quills and other parts for Native American textile reproductions.

Some people just don't like other people doing what comes naturally. Real food doesn't come in a plastic wrapper.

*Oh, and just to edit to add:

Christ was a Carpenter. If His profession had been as Esau's was, I am sure He still would have found favor with our Creator and take pride in His profession, just as was the case with Esau and his own dad, Isaac, both of whom belong to Christ.

Genesis 25
27And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. 28And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells his Birthright

29And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 30And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. 31And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? 33And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

I have heard this argument from the Holy Bible before. In Malachi chap 1 vs 2 and 3, you will see what the Lord felt about the 2 boys. I am not a total vegan myself..but if you are going to follow Christ, shouldn't you try to do as He did? He ate lots of fish it seems and now they say that fish is one of the healthiest things. Going out of your way to snag a giraffe and stand there smiling DOES seem like something Esau would have done. And look what he sold out (his birthright!) for the beef stew! THEN, was served up lentils! Anyway, here is Malachi 1:2-3 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob,

3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.

*BUMP* for the OP that says "Christ was a Carpenter. If His profession had been as Esau's was, I am sure He still would have found favor with our Creator and take pride in His profession, just as was the case with Esau and his own dad, Isaac, both of whom belong to Christ."
