Yes and no.

Ice chucks break off all the time. This is noteworthy because of its size, etc, this is a rare event and not a normal iceberg breaking off.

The Day After Tomorrow links are in my mind actually stronger.

This was not the ice sheet in the movie, but interestingly a few years (well I think it was more like 13 years) after they made the movie, a chunk of that same ice shelf did break off.

What I find interesting too, as part of the lead up into the main event New Delhi in India got snow, now it didn't snow there this year, but India got unusual amounts of snow, and record colds including New Delhi which got mention.

Additionally, the Gulf Stream is now at its weakest in 1000 years (of course I question the length of time, but point in weakest ever since we have measured it), and when the Beaufort Gyre unlocks will likely slow right down, which was the next event depicted in the movie.
