Re: FREE LAND - Living Off The Grid With No Money
Considering mice and moisture will destroy a building faster than anything why not have a container arrive that is full of panels like this. 3 layers for the floor and roof and 2 for the exterior wall as 1 panel deep for interior walls. Cut with a water-jet at some place that has IKEA like building from homes to sheds to garages.
Geo thermal heating and cooling is as cheap as it goes. Water in a lake in northern Canada will keep a home above the freezing mark using just a small solar powered pump. The the 'deep south' the temp will be used to cool a home so the AC is used less.

What is needed (and being kept away) are small power plants that can run a 'large cabin' or small village, both of which are far from 'the grid'. The power-plant sent to Mars looks like a Sterling Engine that uses a bit of DU to make the heat differential needed to run it.

Yeah, I knew a young man in Texas, had a wife and a child. He told me there was free land up in Canada, all you had to do was go there and claim it. Being from Canada I told him it wasn't as simple as that even if true.

Well he sold everything he owned, loaded up the car with the wife and kid and left.
About 3 weeks later he came back to work and I asked him how it went.

Not too good he said, the Canadian border guard wouldn't even let him into the country.

Me too! Gonna check this out. I always wanted to live off of the land. I kinda did it when I was younger with no water and no electricity but I did not farm. I did my homework at night with an oil lamp! Chopped wood for the stove as that was our only heat and how mom cooked. I remember our cat jumped on it... ONCE. I tried to catch her in the air but missed and I heard SIZZLE then she screamed and took off. We had to wrap all four paws with burn cream and gauze but he got better.

Super interesting link! Lists ways and places in both the USA and Canada where you can get free or nearly free land. Also discusses building a free home, purifying water for free with no well etc..

This is SO naive and SUCH bullshit.

It's a fairy tale with no basis in reality.

Just try it and see how quickly you are kicked off your "own" land.

You have to meet all kinds of zoning and code requirements for any inhabited structure used as a residence.

You can't even park a $500,000 motor home on your own land and live in it permanently.

Only if you are using it as a residence while your REAL home is being built on that land. And they usually only give you six months before they will kick you off your own land.

You can still visit or WALK on your land, but cannot LIVE on it.

I knew a guy and he would go into abandoned homes and "harvest" fixtures and railing and whatever was "salvageable".

What you are suggesting likely won't work. Even if by chance it does, you still will need construction material. Tell you what, go visit someplace like Builder's Square or Home Depot and see what things cost now. If you got no scratch, how will you do this? Junkyards?

To out some scratch together, you could try advertisements for free items and selling those and using some as construction materials or to furnish a place.

Re: FREE LAND - Living Off The Grid With No Money
Young people now seem extremely naive and lack skills that people in history had as that was the norm.

The wise thing to do as a caring parent is to create a liveable space in a basement or attic, with the young couple saving money, and eventually either using that as a down on a home, or ending up owning the property and caring for parents. That worked in history.

That young couple learns skills and have less bills so can marry and be responsible.

What is being suggested is largely not Christian or responsible.

What 4-5 couples could do is fix up an old farm and live together, and flip it once you get it operational. Share the profits. Do it many times so all of them gain rural skills and eventually each couple owns a hobby farm of less than 10 acre.

Pray about it.

It all depends on where you’re talking about.

Location, location, location.

Example - Puna district on the Big Island of Hawaii. Not “free land but super cheap and you HAVE to live off grid. Plus, most people build whatever the hell they want regardless of any permits.

There are many extremely rural areas where you have to live off grid and nobody worries about permits.

Re: FREE LAND - Living Off The Grid With No Money
I don't want y'all to lose what little savings you scraped together. This happens all the time with young naive newly married couples (and likely a little one).

There are people who teach newbies how to build homes out of tires and filled bags of soil. What you do is live in a tent and help a couple build their home under the guise of a ramrod. That person knows what they are doing. So you do that maybe 6-10 times and learn new skills, and new people come along, and maybe you get a lot of free labor yourself that way. That has an appeal and at least you got some training under a mentor. There is wisdom to this.

Or you could look for a permie community. You meet them and they check you out. You live in a tent and learn skills from permie homesteaders, and if nothing else, build some backbone, make some valuable friends, and learn a lot about gardening, carpentry, raising livestock and bees, aquaculture, rocket mass heater, rain water cachement.

Have some common sense about it. See with actual skills and references, then as a calm wise young responsible couple, maybe you could be caretakers. They always need them.

Realize that most people are lazy and so permies and others have had bad experiences with unstable undependable types. Some people are ill suited to living in a peaceful community where there is work to be down from 5 am to midnight.

A young man, who is a hard worker, might talk to low level landlords who fix up properties. Get them to hire you. They might of you sleep at the place if you busy your rump working hard.

You will learn all kinds of skills. Save your pay. Eventually you scrape some together and you will be a better man for it.

What guys used to do is build the basement first and live in it and get buddies to help them do bursts of work. Eventually it is under roof so livable but very rough and cold or too hot. Then you wife and likely baby move in when it is somewhat decent for them.

Re: FREE LAND - Living Off The Grid With No Money
Find a small time contractor and likely at the end of jobs he or she has remnants of supplies which maybe they can't use as it's some oddball material. You can sometimes get bargains that way. It isn't a lot of material and maybe you just haul it off. People do a small job and the same thing happens or they quit in the middle of it as they run out of dough.

You have to have a dependable truck.

Supplies are super expensive now and you likely have no credit or bad credit. You are cutting corners just to finish something you really can't afford to do.

Guys who make this work often are getting only 4 to 6 hours of sleep as they are working for pay, then immediately working on fixing up a home, and have zero free time.

Thanks, Rev!

We were just discussing creating a commune, but maybe it's ok to join an existing, established one off grid? :)

He said they were mostly crazy - unbalanced - a threat to others - and drug users who didn’t create much for all the hoopla and ads to get “members”

A very famous one in Arkansas he stayed a week

Said they didn’t work - bathe- have the quality of food he assumed they did- and as a vegan he would not consider their lifestyle

And that was a top rated one

Plenty places to live off the grid and not be watched. Hawaii is one of them. As long as you are legally on the land - own, lease, rent - you can be as off grid as you want. Nobody “watches” and it’s not only encouraged but also a necessity in certain areas.

The best deals are not free.

Try zillow.com and look for properties under $10,000 in your state or area of interest.

For example, I have seen houses in dying towns in New Mexico for $10,000 or less. Ditto for mobile homes/tornado magnets out in the boonies on small lots.

If I was really poor, I would buy a small plot outside of any city and put up a tent. Later, an old motorhome or trailer would be an improvement. Even an ocean cargo container can be made into a livable home.

This thread reminded me of reading The Last Whole Earth Catalog about 50 years ago. It inspired me to purchase my small farm with the old house for cash 7 years ago.

There was a serialized novel in the Whole Earth Catalog about a guy trying to renovate ruined land in Appalachia called:

[link to offgridpermaculture.com (secure)]

The greatest challenge in such areas is simply making a living. However, we can now work remotely, so if you have cell service or even a satellite hookup, you can still do some kind of work.

I knew a guy who lived out of his pickup camper out West. He made a LOT of money going to ranches and inseminating cows. It was a dirty job, but he got rich doing it while having very low expenses. He simply took a course in artificial insemination and set up shop.

Re: FREE LAND - Living Off The Grid With No Money
Haven't y'all heard of a 'Barndominium' (Barn + Condominium)???

Some folks call them a 'Shouse' (Shop + House)...

They have been the rage around here for many years!!!

You see, a pole barn needs no permit if it is an Agricultural structure. So people put up a large shell building, usually like a shop with metal siding and roofing, and then cordon off a portion of the insides for living quarters.

My neighbor had a big shop with the back half completely built into a sweet 'cabin-like' dwelling, and I drove by his 'shop' many times when he had the doors open, and all I could see were his truck parked in there and regular shop stuff like a work bench and gas cans.

But on the back side, away from the road, you could barely make out a nice wooden deck with an enclosed porch that had some flower pots.

My other neighbor told me he and his wife had been living in there for decades!!!

The county could care less, because he had a small double wide on his land he claimed as his house, but actually used it for an office... he is a D.O.- Radiologist.

My brother just sold his place in Cali, and is on the road to North Carolina to an acre of land he just bought... in the sticks but has water and power to the property line... and he is going to put in a big shop (he's a total motorhead), and then a Barndominium in the back half for him and his dogs.

He asked the Realtor about permits, and was told there were no permits for a 'Pole Barn'.

Just an FYI for those who are serious about living off the land but have little money.

Oh... and land squatters would get their ass shot 'round here... I would not recommend it!!! Buy your land and earn it!!!

Bro paid 30K for his one acre in N.C., so land is affordable if you shop around!!! It had an old trailer on it that had to be removed, but mostly just trees. Nice neighbors, too!!!

Good luck, future Homesteaders!!!
