Chinese authorities are urging citizens not to order goods from overseas, claiming a recent Omicron infection detected in Beijing came from an international package sent from Canada.

Authorities said the patient diagnosed with the Omicron variant on Saturday had “self-reported” that they had received a package on 11 January. The package had been sent four days earlier. Authorities have since quarantined the patient’s family, the courier, and more than 60 others as close contacts, and tested more than 16,000 people in the patient’s home district of Haidian.

Yeah, you'd think that some of the West would look at how China is responding and wonder if maybe this is something we should be more concerned about ... but, apparently not. Don't get me wrong, I don't advocate welding people into buildings or locking them in their offices -- but there IS a middle ground.

From the moment they locked down 11 million people over 300 deaths, I was saying they knew something about this virus that nobody else did.

One of my clients canceled this month's safety training because the entire company had Covid.

I'm thinking I'm going to be requesting to work from home for a couple of weeks, although the office is practically empty.

I think maybe, at a point, it becomes a harm reduction/damage control model. We can't stop this virus, unless a true sterilizing vaccine is made, and it would need to be forced on huge numbers of people who would be unwilling to get it.

The "let it burn" model is going to be pretty catastrophic as the weeks roll on, if this doesn't peak and drop off pretty shortly. Given that people are already getting second (and, in a few cases, third) omicron infections, I don't see why it would drop off very substantially. Our numbers are more or less meaningless now, since home tests don't make it into the figures. Hospitals are already overloaded, and the healthcare workers are so exhausted that they can't continue doing this level of crisis care indefinitely.

Personally, I think it would be wise to go back to some restrictions -- masks, social distancing, limiting of non-essential travel -- at least for a while. At the very least, time enough to let the hospitals catch up somewhat.

But, the average person seems to believe that Omicron is mild, and therefore nothing to worry about. They also figure since it is almost inevitable that most of us will get it, we should just throw all restrictions out the window.

At least where I am, people do mask, and are generally pretty Covid cautious. Even still, the rates of transmission are really high.

The CDC finally said band has to go and schools are fuming. Fucking hilarious. This is the most contagious version and they think wind instruments are a good thing.

The sad thing is that the rest of us DO know at least a good part of why we should be trying to stop transmission. Every single variant has caused cardiovascular problems, neurological problems, organ failure, and devastating lung damage, and that is just for starters. There is plenty of evidence that even mild cases disrupt a lot of the body's systems in ways that may lead to cancer, auto-immune issues, and a host of other longer term problems.

Now, China may indeed know a lot more than the above, but those things alone are a pretty good reason not to let it rip through your population, particularly when it appears that people are getting it multiple times. Whatever immunity is conferred by prior infection, it is not sufficient to stop the spread via re-infections with the same variant or a different one.

Or do they just have 2 few hospitals to manage even a small intake.
