data for 2020 reminds me. we had hoped DUTCHY would have found someone with updated death estimates for the world via society changes. like cell phone usages,less power used,less food imports,etc. the last i saw was the 30-50 million from CHINA due to less cell phones.that was a year ago.

someone should have that by now. we are 3 mths past year 1 for CHINA.

Don't get your hopes up. Normally you would look at a change in one variable and assuming nothing else changed a conclusion could be drawn about another. This doesn't really apply in the current situation because in trying to prevent the worse from happening we changed all the variables. If you close restaurants you "consume" a significantly lower amount of food because they are okay throwing out 5$ in steak at cost to sell you a $2.5 at cost steak for $25 as a meal. Cooking at home can shave a good 33% of waste/consumption.

Variables that are less effected can be manipulated to show whatever you want and the standards for what actually counts as a Covid death changes all over the world. In the US there has been a lot of fuss over NY misattributing deaths that originated in care homes away from there because they happened in hospitals, yet there are strong indications that some states are being creative with causal attribution which imho is a bigger sin.

China is anyone's guess, all the information coming out of there is shaded to either extreme: it's overstated to a big degree to fit the china bad narrative or understated to fit the china good narrative. I can't even honestly say when or where the outbreak originated inside China.

Beyond that a decent rule of thumb seems to be western nations reporting ~66% of deaths and ~50% of cases with non-western nations varying greatly but saying that some are reporting as low as ~10% would not be a reach. I'd go with ~10-20m deaths for 2020 minimum. Upper range is very hard to define because covid will kill you quickly if you were dying regardless the line of where to attribute it one way or the other is arbitrary. If you're doctor doesn't know better or there is no doctor it's easy to mistake for a influenza/natural death in the elderly if there is never a diagnosis.

Long story short (TLDR) I don't have a clue and it will take a decade or two to know what happened in 2020 to a low degree of certainty.
