Gibson or Fender | |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 80069051 02/21/2021 01:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've played both brands for 25 years. Both are very overpriced. Gibson in general seems to rely a lot more on better looking, quality woods and a more labor intensive building process that makes a lot of Fender guitars seem like something a high schooler would make in shop class. Not trying to demean Fender, I've gigged their guitars and basses for decades. Each has it's own sound, though in the electrified music era the pickups and amp are what you hear 99% of the time. The amplifier became an instrument itself in the 60's when it became commonplace to intentionally overdrive them for a different sound. In that situation a guitar made of plywood will sound about the same as a $10K customshop Gibson. Nothing against Fender I just don’t like single coil pickups since I mainly play metal and hard rock. I love my 61 re-issue SG, the 57 classic pickups sound great, it’s very lightweight and the neck is one of the best I’ve ever played, unfortunately it’s a true re-issue...won’t stay in tune and it has a dead spot around the 14th fret on the G string, I clamped a weight onto the headstock to change the resonance of the guitar and it worked, it shifted the dead spot higher up the neck where I rarely play. My other SG is a standard and it came with the 490R and 498T pickups, didn’t particularly like them so I swapped in a set of Burstbucker Pros and it sounds great now. As far as amps I prefer vintage Mesa/Boogies, best metal amps ever made as far as I’m concerned, I have an old Mark IIB and a Studio .22 right now but would love to find a vintage Mark IIC+. I’ve always wanted a Marshall JCM800 and lately I’ve been getting into building amps and I built a 1 watt amp with a JCM800 pre-amp but they sent me a bad transformer so I’m waiting for the replacement so I can finish the amp. Out from the belly of a whale came a prophet, Amen! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79054043 United States 02/21/2021 02:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Lots of talk about “good” and “better”... Let’s define the differences. Fender uses 25.5” scale, Gibsons are 24.75 That means that the same gauge strings will have less tension on a Gibson. They will bend easier and sound warmer, and get muddy when driven hard. The single coil versus humbucker thing is obvious. Fender uses maple necks, which also add to the more treble dominance of Fender. Mahogany is actually a lousy wood for building guitars, but traditional continues... The radius and string spacing differences are purely subjective based on hand size and playing style. “Better” is only better for you. PRS is the middle of the road compromise at 25” scale. A proper professional set up is the biggest factor in how a guitar plays, as long as it isn’t a total POS. Good tuners help it stay in tune. A good bridge and nut will give good sustain. You can put Duncan’s in a Hondo and it will crush. But we do all seem to shell out the big bucks for those Gibson and Fender logos, don’t we? Tele Strat LP or SG? That’s like asking Phillips Flathead Torx or Robertson. I custom build guitars here in Telluride, and use maple neckthrough construction, usually 25” scale 16” radius. I’ve always preferred humbuckers but lately am thinking of going with a HSS model, to appeal to a broader market. It kills me when I see someone pay $2600+ for a factory guitar like a LP. It’s a $900 guitar, a $600 logo, and $1100 in Gibson legal fees to sue all the small builders who make guitars that look even remotely like a Gibson. Eff them. Eff them right in the ear. |

If the question is only Gibson or Fender... Gibson is better. Don’t confuse politics with build quality as cheap guitars are great. I,prefer vintage like myself. But I’m going to suggest a ubuild guitar kit. Many exist with copies of most popular guitars. If you don’t want to build it. Ask ar woodwork shops, lumber or specialty woods or a Pentecostal person. They could get it built however colors accessories you might wish. Fenders are a lot more comfortable and sound great for single coil stuff. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79638619 First electric, 1982 Fender Lead III w/dual Humbuckers. Still have it, got my daughter the metallic purple rebirth for Christmas last year. Maybe not the ultimate, but a blast to play, and nice styling (I like the more compact look over the Strat, acknowledging of course it’s less expensive). Yes, all of the above and some Japanese guitars. Epiphone is OK but after you get done switching out the electronics you realize you should have bought the Les Paul in the first place. Squire is firewood. Amps are difficult because they fit the dynamics of the song and have to match the guitar and style. No solid state, no modeling amps, they are flat. So many guitars so little time! I would go for an old Strat through a Fender Champ, but I’m a blues guy. Umm, that’s what I’ve got. I feel very constrained with a Les Paul because it has no whammy bar. They are superior guitars in every way, but the Strat is so clean at low settings and produces overtones, feedback, and quacks from it’s economical futuristic design. It depends, what sound do you want to make? Smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast. Fender Precision is the best or a Fender Jazz Bass if ya gots small hands Never found a Gibson bass that 'grabbed' me (some of you will get that pun) I much prefer the sound of a P bass over anything else but they are ugly looking things but I'll say Gibson never made a bad looking bass. |
