It's almost impossible to flush out or sanitize while you are repairing it. Hence the boil water notice. It is State law. You could encounter cryptosporidium, gardia, E.Coli, and other nasties. Depending on your locarion in regards to the actual break, you may smell a heavy chlorine odor. That's the water company trying to disinfect the pipe while repairing it. BTW, N95 masks block up to 0.3 microns (I,e. useless against a virus, they are meant to stop bacteria and prevent infecting aa patient during surgery) All other masks forms, handkerchief, Home Depot painters mask, etc, are useless against both.
