Me too. I remember going to someone's house and there was a boy sitting in a stuffed chair just staring at the TV. That was early 60s, things haven't changed much. My dad bought an expensive new color TV, and would be mad at us kids when he came home and the color was off. He was certain we were messing with the color settings when he was gone. I don't think anybody was, it was just a goofy TV. It didn't last very long. |

I prefer good old fashioned ovens to properly cook and bake, but I do use microwaves at work for expediency. Quoting: superflyscot I'd imagine the GLP types of days gone past probably would refuse to use them. They were HUGE and heavy, made a LOT of noise, and worked less well than they do now. But they WERE much faster than traditional cooking, so the smart people who could afford them used them. Now almost everyone NOT wearing a tin foil hat uses them. . |

Nobody ever cooked popcorn the old fashioned way again after getting a microwave. |

I remember the first time a friend of mine got a microwave (I didn't have one, we were too poor! I was about 6 or 7...) We were at his house, all playing Monopoly. I'm assuming his older sister was trusted with the babysitting, but we all eventually got bored with Monopoly...once it started going bad for one player. So we get up, and my friend has the bright idea of mentioning the brand new microwave... His younger brother starts grabbing shit (like teddy bears) and runs to the kitchen and starts stashing shit into the microwave. He presses some buttons (like a number of minutes) and it starts going... First, it was like a morbid curiosity, because FUCK YEAH, WE WANT TO SEE WHAT A MICROWAVE CAN DO, and at the same time it was pure anticipated horror, like, what could go wrong?? Well... It didn't take long until something that he put in there arced and caught the teddy bear (with diaper) on fire... Everyone freaked out and my friend ran and grabbed as much of his parent's jewelry and started shoving it all in my pockets...and *everywhere else* after they were full! (I probably had a Rolex halfway up my ass and didn't even know it.) So now smoke is billowing somehow out of the new microwave, and there is flashing in the glass window like that one scene in Gremlins, and everyone is freaking the fuck out! I evacuate the premises (and simultaneously abscond, rather unknowingly with the family's jewelry) thinking I'm some sort of hero for rescuing it all from a house fire. I'm trying my best to walk home and not have necklaces and tennis bracelets fall from my pockets. If I recall, I did drop a bunch of shit, and when I picked that up, I dropped more shit! But eventually all was good, but when I get home... ...I get my ass beat like no tomorrow with a very nasty hairbrush to my raw, naked, pleading ass!! Things sort of resolved (but not my ass) after explanations finally came forth. No burned house, a rather fucked microwave, saved jewelry and a very, very sore ass... It sucks for popcorn and there is so much fat and garbage in those microwave popcorn bags. I don't get why people would buy them for home use. Spend a couple more minutes and make good popcorn that is tastier, cheaper and healthier. We used microwaved popcorn to kill off the rats down at the barn. |

The question was, and still is - it is OK to send high-powered microwaves out within a highly contained gaussian box, but is it safe to walk through microwaves at airport security or have them sitting next to you in your wireless router? The concern when they came out was always the door sealing capability of the metal enclosure. To this day you still shouldn't stand in near proximity of the door. |

The first GE Radar Range could cook a 20 pound turkey in just 6 minutes. The problem was it would also cook a hotdog in milliseconds. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79211509 I actually tested this one time with pumpkin seeds. Half the seeds were watered with ordinary rainwater and the other half with rainwater that had been microwaved and then cooled. Not a bit of difference between the two. |

My neighbor friend, must have been 6-7, had one, they were loaded. I remember his dad cooking us hotdogs. I told him I didn't like hot dogs and he said that's whats on the menu. Thinking back, I should have never said that. I taught my kids to not do things like that, but whatever. I remember when we got one a couple of years later, my Dad was sold it could cook anything. He made hamburgers in it and other stuff, it was nasty. It soon became a thing to heat up stuff in, which I think is most people use it for, that, frozen dinners, and popcorn. Air fryers are where it's at. I cook everything in there. |

I had a big wood-tone Amana. It was around 1984. For some reason I didn't trust it and refused to use it for the first couple of years. After that I would use it occasionally. That was when I was married to my first husband. He still has that Amana and it still works fine. |

My first was about a hundred pounds! It sort of broke and I had to have a technician come in to repair it. Mostly made hot water. No real frozen meals in the stores yet. Now if one breaks down ya just toss it and get another. |

My Aunt asked her "Why did you get that cancer box?" I always had one until mine broke 10 years ago, I just never replaced it. I use a toaster oven instead. |

YEAH!!! 57 here. I remember when they came out and they were outrageously expensive but my Mom preferred cooking on a stove saying it was safer. Now she uses one over a stove- lol I also remember when VCR's came out and we were the first family to get one and everybody wanted to come over and see how it worked. In my neighborhood we would all sit outside around a neighbor's TV which we would bring outside and watch Baseball. Everyone brought a dish of some kind and we had neighborhood block parties. Everyone wanted to know if our new VCR could record baseball games for the neighbors that had to work and didn't get to watch the game. And when Cable TV came out and MTV was ALL MUSIC <3 I was in HS my friends would come over to watch it. Damn- I need a time machine. Microwave dinners- |
