South Texan here checking in. Not really complaining and haven't heard any locals complaining either. Mostly people just offering help or relaying news. A lot of people got ready on Friday as all the hardware stores were packed then. We did alright and on day 3 without power now.

As far as my family, we were ready with candles, flashlights, kerosene and oil lamps, lots of blankets. Also had power banks for electronics and 60 gallons of water stored. Our water stayed running and most of our frozen foods were outside so none of it spoiled. We're cooking on a propane grill. Will be investing in a wood burning stove for future cold spells then we'll be perfectly fine. We stayed nice and toasty though just by covering drafty windows and doors and cuddling under blankets.

On a plus we had a lot of family fun playing games. We didn't leave the house since we had everything we needed. I think the worst has passed now so all is good. Honestly the only downside is I can't wait to have a warm shower lol. Also lost most of the plants in the greenhouse but was able to get most of them in the house beforehand.

You have to keep in mind though that our winters are so rarely like this. In our area we're used to 2-5 days in the 30s throughout the whole winter season. We're talking a whole week of 20-10s with wind chills of 0. We prep mostly for heat in the 110s and fires.

If by 'Apocalypse' you mean the global revelation that the Sun has very predictable cycles that almost everyone in the 'Judeo-Christian' West has been mindfucked into forgetting and ignoring for the convenience of the Control System Narrative™, then you're totally on the right track.

NE TX here..
I have always had around 3 months worth of food and water prepped, so no problems there.

As for the weather...don't have central heat, so bought extra space heaters before this shit rolled in...then got cut to half-wattage by the power company so electric heaters are about as effective now as a candle.

BUT...I'm still prepped anyways. Had three 18,000BTU portable propane heaters in storage and 10 full 15gal tanks (90hrs max per tank).

Power has went out a few times today, but I'm content with a book or a boardgame.

Re: So. With GLP's 500+ Plus Archive of Basic Prepping Threads...Texas?
I am sympathetic with the Texans and others who are having difficulty due to unprecedented winter weather. It sucks, people are going to have major problems from this, some may take severe damage/expense to homes or businesses, there may even be fatalities (thinking mostly older folks and the infirm).

Having said that, human beings have a pretty well-defined set of operating parameters. If there were an operating manual, the following would be listed as prerequisites for human survival:

Food
Water
Shelter (warmth/cooling)
etc. but those are the big three.

To the extent you place your reliance for any of those in the hands of someone else, you expose yourself to the risk that that "someone" will let you down.

In the modern world it is difficult to be 100% independent indefinitely, and this is broadly true for just about any civilization since the pyramids that involved specialization of labor and fungible exchange (money of some sort).

However it is NOT terribly difficult to buy yourself some time to give that "someone" time to circle back and come through for you, eventually.

Instead of running to the store or restaurant every day, have a pantry where you store a week or two worth of groceries, in case for whatever reason going to the store or restaurant isn't an option. That lessens your dependence on them substantially... the store can be closed for a few days, or you can become unable to get there... and you still aren't without food... the "operating parameter" of food is preserved and your existence continues without incident.

Same with water... municipal supplies or even wells sometimes have problems. Having some stored water buys you time to deal or wait-out the problem, and again, your existence continues without dire incident.

Heat - it's a prerequisite for human life. Hypothermia is no joke. Just think how many people in TX would be glad to have a generator to run an extension cord to, from which they could run a little space heater and have at least one room in the home that is warm enough for comfort? Or even a battery bank with a couple of solar cells, which could run an electric blanket overnight? That could be a life-saver for an elderly person who can't take the cold. Even a little propane or alcohol burner can make enough heat to preserve life and some measure of comfort (of course one must manage potential for oxygen and carbon monoxide issues, not difficult to do if one approaches it as a normal intelligent person).

So the question here is, a week ago how many stores had generators and batteries for sale? And how many people knew they existed... but just didn't consider backup power important? And of those, how many are seeing that importance in a whole new light the past couple of days? How many big-screen 4k tv's were bought for superbowl parties that cost more than a simple generator, a few gas cans full of fuel, and a couple of deep cycle batteries? I'm certainly not here to laugh at anyone who is having problems, but hopefully as they sit in cold, dark houses wondering if their pipes will burst, they are reconsidering the wisdom of their choices.

I'm very sorry for the people having problems due to the low temps and storm conditions, and the resulting electric outages... aside from wishing them all good luck in weathering the present crisis, I HOPE more will look at this as an example of what can happen, and take steps to ensure that when/if it ever DOES happen again, they will be in a position to fare better the next time.

Bottom line - a bare minimum backup option ought to be secured for every basic human need. If you don't have that, you really are at the mercy of "someone" who may or may not take your well-being as seriously as you do, and who may or may not be able to make good on promises they have made to deliver on. Something to think about.

Without fail you have something nasty to say on every thread. You must hate yourself most sincerely, to be so hateful to everyone else. Why click on threads only to be ugly? Form an ugly thread of your own - you will have even more attention that way, and apparently you crave attention.

Just go find something positive to do, and shock yourself!

Well-written and considered. Only disagreement I see offhand is that water should most certainly be listed above food as a requirement for human life.

We all need to be praying for the elderly and the ailing as well as the disabled, who may not survive the cold. Please pry and then check on your neighbors in such a state. [No pun intended]

The not so funny thing about the syncs is, is that just when one starts talking shit about how prepped they are while poking at others suffering, The Cosmic Joke™ throws out a brutally timed Punchline™

Yes, that is a bit of an eyeopener. To see reality as all tooth and claw with blood dripping. I guess after last years tree fiasco (all my writing on that went poof with HLFs grilled cheese thread) I learned a lot...ie...can thrive nicely with very little and don't open the chest freezer unless absolutely neccessary. But yes, there are thousands of threads on GuLP about prepping and no one seems to have taken Coles notes of them. Aside from Pooka.

True...talking to older (then myself at 52) ranchers/cattlemen, farmers of various and sundry plants...the cycles that they have noted are about 50 years long. Ie, I grew up in the snowbelt. The snowbelt moved (include Buffalo in that zone), but it shall return. SHortly, if 1977 was anything to gauge anything by.

Re: So. With GLP's 500+ Plus Archive of Basic Prepping Threads...Texas?
My brother, SIL, mother, his MIL (o2 dependent 24/7), my nieces, 3 cats and 2 dogs are all stuck in Dallas and have had no power except for like an hour, for the last 24hrs. They have a gas fireplace, a gas cooktop and that's about it. They're all in the house I grew up in, which has a fuckton of big windows. I am really, really worried about them. There is a greenhouse with a plumbed-in gas heater- my brother has been going out there some, but the elderly ladies can't- the fall risk is too great.
 Quoting: snark

Have you ever slept with a brick or hot rock wrapped in a towel while camping ? Stack some beside the fireplace and use oven mitt when you wrap them for bed. During the day keep hot brick under your blanket. Yes I grew up where the only heat was in the parlor cook stove.

Even puting just sheet blocking the hallway of a heated room will make the heated room warmer. Use a tie to control the temperature and let some loose in the rest of the house.

Digging snow I have better luck with coal shovel or flat shovel. Those snow shovels will give you a heart attack.

My Texas people are using their heat to keep the animals warm. Grandma came down wearing her winter olympics parka to the envy of the grand kids and their parents. Football star nephews are making bank using flat and dirt shovels on walks and driveways. The football monster did break the rope on the generator. They are going to shove the freezer food into rubbermaid totes in snowbanks. Grandma's quilt crew are loaning out the quilts they hate. Grilling on the pool deck Is a pain but that 500 gallons of propane on the grill is not going to run out.

Lots of people are suspicious about this cold snap

They are wondering if it is weather mod. All I have to say in reply is DARK WINTER. We were promised one, and now, in many places, the LIGHTS ARE OUT. And this never happened before. Gosh, how did Biden know beforehand???
