It's as if one summer Minnesota temperatures hit 130 and everything melts and burns. Similar unreal weather. GLP Prepping Threads are GOLD (thanks, Pooka), but parents with families and jobs generally don't have as much downtime as others to surf and read.

Lance, this is one of the best threads ever on here - a great reminder to people of what they need to be doing. Considering how things are going in this country, politically, spiritually, domestically, weatherwise, everything, anyone not prepared to save themselves for a matter of months, at least, if not years, is making a huge mistake.

Hoping your thread gets people back on track, and shows the newbies and the uninformed what they desperately need to be doing RIGHt NOW, due to trends in life.

Thank you for knocking foreheads together trying to get people moving on preparation and self-sufficiency.

God bless and keep you, Lance, and yours, as well.

I love you darling. All we can do is try. Everything that went on today is simply nonsense with Texans. I can help with anything anyone has to query. It's not my issue, time, time is my friend at present. It may cease to be but, until it is, I am Here2Help. I can't believe GLP thus far, this much apart, after all the talks, diatribes and dissertations has epically failed. Potently failed and hope all the MoFo's have learned from this or go back to pretending they are AJ and well walleted. Fucking idiots.

I'm a Texan and I lived through this just fine, even with a day of no power.
The problem we are having that all of you " waaah its just snow" people are overlooking is that this is a historic cold snap.
We don't HAVE to bury our water lines 2 feet deep, because it just doesn't freeze like this ordinarily. That means that where our pipes are exposed, for instance, on a back porch where the water heater lives, we have to use an electric heater. Regular pipe wrap ain't stopping 2° from freezing the lines. So there is heater #1
Yes, you can leave the water running, but many of our drain lines are bare pipe under the house.(pier and beam) So we throw some heat trace on them.
We all have dogs, many of which are Outside Dogs who simply wont stay inside. They scratch at the door and whine and bark to be let out.So we put a heater on a porch near a doghouse or hastily improvised blanket abode. That's heater # 2.

A lot of us live in older houses that don't have very good insulation. The bathroom can literally be freezing. The pipes in the wall are an inch and a half from the outside wall. That's heater #3.
The plants we grow here can't take the cold, so the go in a heated(barely) greenhouse. Heater #4.

Of course where you are couch cuddling is freaking cold. Heater #5.

So the situation i just described is my house, but i a8n't alone. Most people around my little town have similar houses.
We are using power unlike summer, because in summer the worst that can happen is you get hot. The dogs live, you live, the plants live, and the plumbing is fine. No problem.

On top of that, we as a State have moved from good old reliable coal plants to freaking windmills, solar, and unicorn farts for some of our power. Hence the shortage. Locally, we lost our 1500 meg coal plant last year. That means less power, and no jobs.
So before you start with the "put more insulation in dumbass", realize that money is in short supply too. There are periodic blackouts on the income stream also.

They barely sell snow shovels down here, they don't have the infrastructure to handle a foot of snow which is basically what I have here.

It's 6f now and the high will be 24.

Melt won't happen, and they don't use salt. Sierra Nevada, where I lived most my life, like Canada, is prepared for this kind of temperatures and accumulation.

I am a dumas and didn't realize that we would get this much so therefore need shit from the shops that I can't get to.

I was going to go off on a rant about "Do I get on the interwebz and call every New Yorker or Illinoisan(?) a unprepared retard when they have a heat wave and are using too much power!!!!!", but then I actually thought for a moment that we can just understand that they don't consider that a deadly heat wave is an actual problem until it happens.
Like us, they cope.

Re: So. With GLP's 500+ Plus Archive of Basic Prepping Threads...Texas?
I moved from Michigan to Texas 11 years ago. I remember laughing at my Texas coworkers when they first told me that everything shuts down when it snows. I told them to just suck it up, put on a coat, and learn to drive slower. But what I didn't understand at the time is that there aren't any snow plows or salt trucks around here. This weather is so rare in the south, that when it happens, they just have to wait for it to melt.
If I were back in Michigan right now, I would have no problems with making a bunch of beer runs back and forth to the grocery store that was a few miles away, even if there was 4 feet of snow, and temperatures of -20. But here in Texas, its not even safe to drive to the store that is right down the street, because none of the roads have been treated, and you aren't allowed to put chains on your tires. Southerners don't have much choice except to just wait for it to melt before they are allowed to go anywhere.
I don't have to worry because I have over a years worth of food and water, along with a generator, fuel, blankets, first aid supplies, ammo, and tons of other preps. All of the people that I know are also well stocked. Its mainly the older residents that I'm worried about. I live close to an area that has a lot of senior living facilities, and the rolling blackouts are a huge problem for the elderly.

Page 1 of Pookas prepping thread...

Oil burns.

You can take a skillet, pour a little oil (or shortening) in it. Twist up a few pieces of paper towel for wicks, drop in the oil and light.

Poof, you have a burner to cook on.

You need to use a skillet/pan with a lid so you can snuff out the fire when y'r done cooking

I would like to see at least one Texan speak on this? LJS if anything since she quasi-declined moving there then moved anyhow? Scrump? Are any Texans actually sporting Texan flags or all they, like many, sporting Canuck flags? I can't believe this BS...makes me sad...
 Quoting: Lance Roseman From BC

My family, friends, and co-workers are all doing just fine. We were ready to deal with the cold and know how to drive on all but the ice rink that usually happens because we get freezing rain more often than sleet or snow, and sleet more often than snow.

We avoid driving if we can because there are idiot male teens and idiot male 20-somethings out there that speed and even try to fishtail intentionally.

Our vehicles are full of gas and we use them to keep our cell phones charged.

My son and daughter-in-law are heating baby bottles with a small propane burner, and keeping the baby between them under two winter sleeping bags unzipped into blankets.

We are eating cold beans and peas out of cans, uncooked pasta, peanut butter, almonds, fruit, and beef jerky.

Our bathtubs are filled with water just in case we end up needing it, and we are not taking showers unless we have two bathrooms.

My stepson and his mom and stepdad are using a small generator and space heater. They've been playing board games and card games.

The only complaining I've heard is about super dry skin, cracked thumbs, and static electricity causing long hair to get in the face. The serious doom complaining I've seen is all online, and I doubt all of the complainers are even in Texas. I'm sure we will complain when we see all of the dead animals that are likely building up out there; sad.

Back in the 80s on a trip to Colorado, the news was claiming a heat wave for the locals. It was 85 degrees F and we thought that temp was great. Acclimatization is a real thing.

I see somebody else's user ID on my post above: Mauritius. Maybe it's on this one too. Weird.

It isn't about prepping, because this is unprecedented. And they were told that the weather would let up Thursday or Friday but now it is Sunday....hopefully.

Thank you! This is exactly the point I was trying to make earlier.

This IS unprecendented. Not something that anyone could have thought ahead and prepped for. Many folks in these areas hardest hit in Texas, may have prepped to the max.... what good does that do them in the face of temps they've never or rarely experienced before, etc.

I'm in Nebraska, where we DO have snowplows, tractors with snow blades, snow shovels, and roads that are cleared as soon as is possible. I am fully prepped, which did come in handy when the snow fell and the temps lowered, I didn't have to run to the store for anything.

And yet... our temps have dropped to -24 F these past several days... and then... my heat went out. I still have power and water, so far. And a ton of preps. Roads are cleared. But am still freezing in here, so am grateful for having a space heater and extra blankets on hand. Have the rooms shut down to one. Going on the third day and the heater guy is here, doing his best to fix whatever the prob is.

So my point was, and still is.... no matter how prepped we are or are not... there can STILL come along some problems that in no way were we able to prepare for, ahead of time, let alone foresee. Especially given our regular situation in whichever area.

Does not help at all for others to come into the forum like this and point fingers and berate them for either what they did not do, or what they did not foresee 'could' happen to them in their area. What would help is if/when someone were to say, how can we help you NOW? What can we help you with what you have just learned about your situation?

Cuz trust me, until you live THRU something like this where we use some of the preps we worked so hard to gather together, we won't know exactly what works the best and what doesn't, what we 'should have' had on hand, and what we didn't need this time around, etc.

it's my understanding that many in texas weren't looking to be needing something as unusual (to them there) as ... a snowplow.

kind of difficult for many of them to get out and about without one of those, atm.

Dude... it's a couple feet of snow...

I lived in the Sierras for many years. We could get TWICE that amount in a night.

It's NOT the end of the world...

And, you can't stay warm within the confines of your insulated HOME without depending on someone else to bring you comfort....

Well, I dont know what to tell you.

Lance is right.... SOOO MUCH Information out there.

"i lived there for a long time and knew how to deal with it. why on earth do people who never experienced it have such a hard time knowing everything I already know?'

I see so much of that stuff here it's weird lol. people talking smack without looking inwards to understand
