The media made him out to be a giant (a giant monster in their case) and the people who followed him made him out to be a giant (a giant fighter to combat the media's giant monster).

But, in reality, if you turned off the perception and just looked at the man, he was never a fighter.

He spoke well, but he caved on everything pretty much immediately. He was the first to open the door to allow the "knee jerk" 2000+ page bills to pass in response to false flag events, etc.

He was a softy, a bleeding heart.
