Oh and it's -17C here (Windchill down to -25C) with heavy winds and some ice crystals in the air making for a lovely light pillar show as a sign of the oncoming apocalypse.
 Quoting: Snuffielover

When it gets way down below zero it actually feels warmer than Texas at 35.

I know this because I used to live close to Montreal back in the 70's and we had MONTHS in a row where it never got about zero Fahrenheit

The reason below zero weather usually doesn't feel as cols as it sounds is the wind doesn't blow when it's that cold, and the sun is almost always out in the daytime, that and there is zero moisture in the air.

There will be plenty of winds and no sun in this large oncoming winter storm.

it’s suppose to be 8 degrees(low) in central texas here in a few days.

8 degrees !
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79270630

We are expecting like a low of 5 in North TX. Unheard of.

I have been here for almost 50 years and can't remember it getting quite that cold.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76578598

One model has Houston at 6 degrees Monday morning and 2 degrees on Tuesday morning. Record low here was in 1899 and it was 5 degrees.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77654754

We have up to two feet of snow forecast for North east Texas.

One model says 6-10 inches and the other 16-23 inches. Low temp of 5 degrees and a high in the fucking teens.

Going to be a lot of business for plumbers, and firemen.

Either way, I'm glad I still have my old snowmobile and kept in in running order, these parts have never seen a snowplow.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52916838

Stay safe. Not liking the 7 to 9 inches predicted for the Houston area Mon/Tues either. Texas will be shutdown if all this happens.

About an1/8 inch coating from just drizzle since last night. Most moisture between 2am - 8am in the morning. I have a tree over my house that I’m building , so I’m going to climb it and take it down.

I saw it on the local news out of Shreveport La. They presented data from two sources ; the national weather service and the the so called "european model".

Looking over this precipitation forecast and taking into consideration 1 inch of rain equals 10-15 inches of snow at 15 degrees, based on my own experience i'd say they are right IF it does get as cold as expected.

I was in New England for that as a kid.

I think we missed two weeks of school.

People came from miles around to sled and ski down the hill on our street and walk back to the top.

I had no idea it might get some snow in Houston. I just went out and rigged up the heat trace on my water line that some idiot home builder or architect decided to stub it up and have it go through the air for about a foot and a half before entering the house.

I threw out my snowblower 6 years ago. I used to live in Buffalo and Pittsburgh, so snow is no a big thing, but Ice storms down south can be deadly, knocking out power and pretty much stopping traffic, since they don't have salt trucks.

Just hunker down a couple days.

I used to live in Anchorage. The answer is simple:

The deep south does not have the equipment to manage ice and snow as Alaska does. The houses are also not built to keep in heat, but to stay cooler during the hot summers -- no triple pane windows, no R-100 insulation.

It would be like taking you, right now, plopping your ass in 105 degree temps with 90% humidity, in full mid-day sun, and calling you a wimp for sweating.

Then wondering why you are so damned wimpy when you learn a Cat 1 is inbound. Real Southerners stand outside in a Cat 1 to recharge.

Arkansas here. People freaking out. Didn't even see the grocery store so busy when first lock down was announced.

All the bread gone. All the milk gone. All the eggs gone.

People acting like its gonna be a bad one.

Everyone stay safe.

Gas station wasn't too bad. Saw plenty filling up jerry cans for generators.

WOW !! Lots of Kentucky people here !!

I moved to the beautiful central Blue Grass Area in 2013 and I absolutely LOVE it.

The news has been in "panic mode" so I've been watching the weather very closely. I wasn't here for the last ice storm.... but Ohio was hit REALLY hard, then.

I'm definitely seeing ice covering everything right now. Haven't gone outside today/tonight, but the railings around my apartment balcony are ice-covered with beautiful little icicles dripping down from them.

It's so good to know that we have a large community of like-minded GLPers here in Kentucky !! Wish we had a place to meetup if the SHTF. I'm a retired widow (all alone) and I'm not sure what I would do if things really get "dicey" - I've got all kinds of survival stuff, and a cool van to hit the road in if necessary. - My kids think I'm totally nuts. I am at the same latitude as Churchill in Canada and we get similar weather minus 30 is common every 11 years or so it cracks me up when people moan about a few inches of snow or freezing conditions cool2

Winds have already been sweeping snow across Scotland, burying railway tracks and whipping up 30ft drifts.

About 40 drivers were rescued from at Loch Dorma in Wester Ross after becoming stranded in 6ft 7in (2m) snow drifts.

It is only minus 17 c tonight lol 10 years ago it was minus 20-30 c for 4 months non stop

In what is known as the bullseye center of this thing south of the Bluegrass.... Not sure how I feel right now. Don't have any heat if I lose my power. I have lots of blankets so I guess I will survive. 3/4 tank of gas but I do not think I will be able to get in it if it ices as it ices the doors shut, much less the handles. And my outside door handles will break if they ice and you try to open them. I'm inside for the duration. I expect.... weather says freezing rain tonight until sometimes tomorrow afternoon sometimes.

This must be a front or something because I'm getting a light drizzle, very light and it's not the coldest rain I've been in in Kentucky here. Been outside and it's nice for Kentucky winter weather, usual stuff. Kentucky's had a real mild winter this year so far IMO. No wind to speak of, nothing yet. Suppose to start after midnight here.

Right now, mushy ground that will freeze in this next week and crunch if you walk on it. My front door ramp will turn into a slide that is hard to come up without ice picks but the dogs climb it no problem after they potty. LOL And I expect all the doors and car to have a layer of ice that either the sun melts when it comes out for the one day this next week they are saying it's peeking out a short time, or I'm iced inside my house and I'm not leaving for around 8-9 days or so. That's if I get hit by this ice storm that I'm suppose to be in the bullseye of. I'm still waiting..... south central KY micro-climate. Seems KY has "micro-climates" and the state varies in how weather happens. Like SF is a micro-climate in CA and the surrounding areas are different weather temps and patterns. It's very interesting how that works to me. But it's another subject for another day.

Nothing yet. Nothing. Just wet with small puddles that will freeze into ice for a week or two. Dangerous to get out. Hope no one loses power. Me included. LOL

I did a lot of research before buying all my survival stuff... I bought a really cool alcohol stove for cooking, and then I found a "thing" that fits over the stove that will heat a room. - alcohol stoves are the safest.... pretty cheap to run, no fumes, and can be put out with water if you're in a hurry. LOL

May be a little late, now that the storm has started... but I'm wishing you luck - stay safe !!

NYC suburbs, we've had about 3 snowstorms in a row, the first one was gale force winds and a day and a half of snow, since then cold so melting is slow, and more snow on top.

Routine is getting old but also getting more automatic: roof rake, then snowblow and shovel. Roofrake is important for preventing ice dams.

Also there's one downspout that a lot of water funnels to, that also is on the north side of the house (less sun), tends to get tree leaves and pine needles because of proximity to those trees -- this one downspout is the problem in every way. I put calcium chloride tablets (roof melt, the size of hockey pucks) up in the gutter around that downspout because that's where an ice dam would form. It keeps stuff flowing. Then in this weather, a day or two later I have to go up and place more there. Maybe someday I'll figure out a way to place them without hauling out the ladder and going up myself.

DON'T VAX, PROPHYLAX!

____________

There is no anger in Me: If one offers Me thorns and thistles, I will march to battle against him, And set all of them on fire.

But if he holds fast to My refuge, He makes Me his friend; He makes Me his friend. (Isaiah 27:4-5)
