Anonymous Coward User ID: 77590476 United States 02/10/2021 01:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Who out there in glp land is getting hammered by this lastest winter storm doom? Quoting: Roadkill Bill I'm in KY, right on the impact zone of what the forecasters and media are calling an emergency situation. We are expected up to 1" of ice thru tomorrow afternoon. Ppl around here have been in a state of near panic for the last 2 days in preparation for this "event" that was scheduled to kick in significantly last night. Well.....this morning we have nothing outside but a bit of sprinkles thru the early morning hours with temps above freezing (so far). The radar is showing a clearing but yet travel restrictions are planned for this afternoon and the alerts are still going out. We have been told that power outage are expected, and will last for several days. On top of that, the temps are supposed to drop down to near 0 by Sunday. It's scaring the old people and causing panic buying everywhere! So, my question is.... Who is getting hit by this "monster" winter storm because it's not us (so far)? Are you anywhere along I-75? We are supposed to travel on 75 tomorrow morning through KY and I don't want to go but husband acts like it will be not big deal. Opinion? Weather map says there will be snow from Richmond north to Cincinnati starting tomorrow morning. There is already snow on the ground. It's only about an inch but temperatures are hovering around 28 to 32 which can turn icy in a hurry. The precipitation travels south through the day as temperatures lower, so make sure you have survival gear in your car and keep cell phones charged. You can sign up for AAA today and it gets activated immediately, they give you an account number which you tell to the tow truck guy. You can check out the weather yourself on [link to www.ventusky.com (secure)] There is a calendar at the bottom left to change the dates, and hourly buttons along the bottom of the screen. Menu on the left allows selection of things like temperature, precipitation, wind speed, snow cover, etc. Thanks for the update. I think I have him convinced to wait until Friday to travel. Thank God. |

But, looks like most of the state will be impacted. I'd definitely check the weather beforehand. |

Forum Administrator 02/10/2021 01:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Something quite new in Southeast Texas. We already received 4 inches of snow a couple weeks ago, and that was very unusual. To have this again, in the same year, is really, really unusual. I was like wtf is this?? The weather radar on the news was showing tons of snow in the areas we were driving through & nothing. It was bizarre. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 79118742 United States 02/10/2021 01:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think we should all maybe think about preparing for the solar minimum if we keep getting these types of winter storms (prolonged cold) especially as it's hitting the south. Quoting: InTheGLPHood And we are too far north.... Something is definitely "off" pertaining to the weather patterns. Not just this storm. So far, it's been a mild winter where I live. But the rain has been off the charts in the last few months. In roughly 6 weeks or so, we've had 4 flash floods in this area. We may get one every 5 to 10 years. That may not mean much to some, but planting season is just a few weeks away and I don't recall a time when the ground was this saturated, this early in the year. So, yeah, you're on to something |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77374864 United States 02/10/2021 01:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Was supposed to be flying out of Dulles for Phoenix ... flight cancelled, a minor thing of 12" of snow on the ground over the previous 3 hours with another 30" on the way over the next 12 hours ... DAMN I thought to myself - almost made it out of Dodge!! Versus being stuck in DC FOR DAYS I decide to drive back to Lexington VA, me, one state patrol car, and about 25 plows were the only things I saw on the way back south and then across Afton Mtn (that was a MESS - only reason I got across was because I followed a DOUBLE gang plow group (2 sets of 3 plows) up and over the mountain) and then down the valley. EVERYTHING was then shut down along I-81 for 2 days - back at my parents in Ohio it was worse, they had to bring in Airport Runway Snow Blowers from Wright Patt to open up the expressways and main roads!! Parents had 12' drifts in places - actual snowfall was over 50". |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77374864 United States 02/10/2021 01:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Serepta Ann, you're giving me a glimpse of my first winter in Iowa - NEXT year (moving there late February). In hometown Houston, 21 degrees is something to remember. Good to be in retirement with ability to hibernate. Quoting: TXGLP2 I lived in SE Iowa for fifteen years. It's a very hard place to live. I can't imagine anyone choosing to go there. Brutal cold and wind in the winter, humid and non-stop bugs in the summer, and the worst ragweed in the entire world all fall. The springtime is beautiful but only lasts for three days. And I'm not even exaggerating. When I lived up north in Michigan for several years they had a FOUR season year. Fall Winter Spring August 1st Good thing I liked winter!! (since it would still snow in April and May!!) |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3033383 That's happened here too mamy times to count. Seems someone is always crying wolf with the weather regardless of the season. Years ago, I was doing a job in Nashville when tornado warnings went out. No one paid much attn because we've all grown numb to weather alerts. But, on that day, 3 direct hits on the north, south and east side of town by EF3 & 4 tornadoes (right at the start of rush hour)....and everyone got the message. That was something that you just had to be there to witness. The weather channels love reporting on the doom and chaos of storms and the aftermath, but never on their false alarms and mass panic. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 3033383 United States 02/10/2021 01:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I just moved back North after living in the South for 20 years, I did enjoy the summer weather but missed having the 4 seasons. The first thaw of Spring, everyone runs out to wash their cars & unpack their summer wardrobe...every moment of Summer is enjoyed thoroughly because we know it won't last...The crisp air of Autumn & the beautiful fall colors, hayrides & cider mills...and the White Christmas, the cuddling inside with a hot meal watching the snow fall, skiing & sledding.... To each his own, I suppose.... |
