I don't understand why NBA players have to wear masks on the bench

It doesn't make sense how NBA players don't wear masks while they're playing, but once they go to the bench, they put their masks on religiously.

Imagine racing speed cars over 100 mph and not wearing seat belts but then having to wear seat belts when you're driving 5 mph. The players are touching each other, but somehow when they're sitting, they need to wear the mask.

And now there's this controversy whether or not the NBA should have an All Star game this year. Well if they're already playing regular games, what difference does it make whether or not they have an All Star game? Does the virus know the difference?

Kevin Durant already had covid. And they had to pull him out because he got tested positive again. But why did they continue the game then? I don't understand how all the rules are so inconsistent.
