Thats what he wants to know, which would be best if you wanted to use it for the most applications, the most versatile. I say MIG, cause you can run inert gas shielded or non inert gas sheiled flux core AND solid wire on it. Most welders can make very good and good looking welds with MIG with practice. 18 volts and 200 wire speed = stacking dimes all day long |

If you’re doing aluminum you need tig. For steel you just need a stick/arc welder. If you use stick the rod matters too. 6011 is an easy all around rod to use and better on dirty jobs. But other rods are better for vert and horizontal applications. I will say it is kinda of fun learning how to weld aluminum with a tig welder. Nipples McGee |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14481951 If you want to do metal fabrication you need a shit load of tools. A 4 and an 8 inch grinder are absolute necessities. "C" clamps, power hacksaws, cut off saws and a cutting torch are other things you'll need, and don't scrimp on the welding hood, cutting goggles and safety goggles. You can damage your eyes really quickly and seeing what you're doing clearly while you are doing it is the most critical aspect of welding. |

I will say it is kinda of fun learning how to weld aluminum with a tig welder. The first two numbers tell the tensile strength in pounds per square inch. I use 6011 on rusted steel mainly , it's not nearly as pretty as say a 7018. The third number tells what positions it can weld in .For instance a "1" can weld in all positions, a "2" is for flat only and horizontal welding only uses a "4". The last number describes the kinds of application the shielding material or flux on the rod is good for. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77640440 United States 02/05/2021 07:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I use a variety of machines. At work we have a common issue with Hemi's breaking bolts in aluminum heads. The shop has a 120V mig welder and we remove the manifold, then weld a little tit on the flush broken bolt. We then hang a nut on it and weld it onto the tit. When it all works, you can put a wrench on the nut and twist the broken bolt out, saving hours of drilling and extracting. I found my $99 Harbor Freight flux core mig works far better than the shop machine as far as getting a good bite and twisting out the bolt. I also find myself reaching for it on exhaust repairs on thin steel as it welds easier without burn through. And it fits in my bottom drawer so I don't have to worry about it wandering off. I hate playing hide and seek with my stuff. |

Less warping than TIG since you do a series of quick spot welds. Takes some time and practice with settings to not blow holes in 20 gauge steel, but after a few days learning I was able to weld in a new 1/4 panel without any extra holes lol. I bought an Eastwood MIG 135 (115 volt) with everything but the gas bottle for $319. Great little welder......I know it's not a Miller but it was 1/2 the price. [link to www.eastwood.com (secure)] |

MIG with gas is the way to go for auto body work. Don't even try one of the $99 Harbor Freight flux core jobs....they leave a crappy weld , they suck on sheet metal and you have to clean off all that damn flux. There is another one that is right up there with it if not better. The difference is the Lincoln has knobs for amp and voltage no exact number. The other welding machine has digital display so you can pick exact numbers. Those are for thinner metals though under 1\4 inch. If you plan on using a welding machine quite a bit. Invest in a dedicated outlet just for it and a higher priced machine. Something with a higher duty cycle. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75414266 that's like asking what the best tool..a screwdriver, a hacksaw or a obd2 reader That’s not what it’s like at all. Anyway, I’m thinking MIG. yea, a MIG is fine, a harbor freight one will work for small jobs flux wire is good for "dirty metal" the flux/acid cleans the weld area. no flux / C25 gas is good for a low slag weld but requires a very clean metal area first! TIG is pretty special stuff for really nice pipe welds and other really showy welds Stick is from the 70's although still used for heavy welds like a 4" plate welded to another 4" plate (hydraulic press frame for example) My Little green harbor freight unit works great for home welding needs (I build British sports cars too) [link to www.harborfreight.com (secure)] |

Very loud but will run 4eva as long as the tank aint MT Naw, it's designed for construction and to be moved in place with a crane, generally high deposition rods that lay a lot of steel fast.. It requires a 220v 150 amp source to run stable at maximum amperage.Don't get me wrong, you CAN use it on lower amperage applications down to 75 amps, but thats not what it was designed for Yes, precisley my point. Diesel Lincolns that REQUIRE craneage to move about to use. Very heavy, very loud. And like you sat, sub 75 amps with anytking thicker than a 3.2mm electrode aint gonna work, except maybe for some vertical. A crew I worked with one time threw a 50 tonne Smith navie down a big, deep cofferdam we we bottom framing because the navie was sorrounded by six Lincolns on full crank, nobody at the top of the hole could hear shit. Too fucking loud. The crane overload alarm was drowned in the din. Stupid cunt that was driving tgar crane (navie) lost it and walked off the back of the running board ... There where eight skins in the bottom of the hole wgen that shit went down ... Luckily, nobody got hurt, but it was a fucking close shave. Navie was lowering a 20 metre 12 tonne tube pile into the bottom frame for bracing when it happened. North bank of Thames river at Woolwitch, London town, circa 1998. Miller construction.
