In the grand scheme of things, Elon Musk screwed the pooch big time yesterday with SN9.

More than anything else in the world SpaceX needed to stick the landing perfectly without any hiccups,
instead we got the biggest explosion in SpaceX's flight history.

Note I didn't say Starship's history,
but instead in SpaceX history.

This was a major malfunction.

SpaceX was under pressure by the FAA to produce a faultless landing.

The FAA had major concerns with what would happen if the Starship SN9 crashed like SN8 did.

SpaceX did not disappoint either, SN9 crashed almost horizontally when it hit.

It was nowhere near vertical as it should have been.

Ignore anyone that suggest that this was a great flight that just ended badly.

The FAA does not have the legal wiggle room to allow SpaceX to continue to crash rockets near areas where it could kill people ,and they can and will do whatever it takes to ensure safe launches and landings.

That is quite literally the purpose of the FAA.

Now the FAA is going to investigate the whole Starship program, and dare I say it there won't be any more launches until the FAA finishes their investigation and SpaceX will have to make the changes that the FAA requires that they make to the Starship program.

Here is my best guess what the FAA will ordered changed:

1) Move the tank farm miles away from the launch pad.

2) Move the landing pad miles away from the launch pad.

3) Move the whole facility at least 20 miles away from the public.

4) The FAA will require their review of the all launch procedures and checklists and SpaceX will have to submit them for approval before every test flight so that the FAA allows any new launches.

5) The FAA will have their man control the destroy rocket button from now on. (Yes Virginia those white boxes on the side of Starship are explosive abort devices designed to blow up the rocket at any time).

I'm sure they will also want more and might even make it next to impossible for SpaceX to launch anything from Boca Chica for the near future.

The objective of the flight was to test the flight controls on the Starship. They never intended to land it. The 'bellyflop' landing was intentional and the airframe was expendable.

Watch the SpaceX site instead of CNN.

I am too, but having dealt with the FAA previously they don't mess around when they know you screwed up.

After SN8 Crashed the FAA gave Elon a warning of sorts, clean up your act or get shut down.

We all knew that was why they stopped the launch of SN9 twice. It had nothing to do with Biden or Trump , it was all about range safety.

Boca Chica is not where the US government wants SpaceX to launch from, and Texas isn't going to stop the government from pulling his permits or authorization.

spin control

The whole point of SpaceX was to build reusable rockets that could land safely and be turned around quickly.

If they deliberately allowed this supposedly reusable rocket to crash and burn like you say, then why would ANYONE want to use their rockets?

Because they're not reusable.

I don't watch CNN, and I do watch SpaceX feed but it is never live except for launches from the cape.

The Belly flop maneuver was never supposed to land on it's belly and I seriously doubt anyone with SpaceX suggested that.

Who are you?

The SpaceX falcon program crashed a lot of rockets before they perfected the process. Starship is building on what SpaceX has learned from Falcon.

The FAA can huff and puff all they want - they can’t stop this rocket.

This is a political issue. Musk hasn’t paid the Democrats enough money.

The FAA controls all airspace in this country.

They have the final say so on all rocket launches in the US.

They provide a NOTAM and TFR's (Notice to Airmen and Temporary Flight Restriction) for SpaceX's launches, in short nothing goes up or down without the FAA permission.

What we have here is a near perfect example of a wasted youth.

Even my iPhone types better for me and spells correctly as well.

Guys like this pollute a forum with hate over the intellectual conversations most of us would rather have.

Strange to think but this was just three years ago...

Back when Starship was called the Big Falcon Rocket.
