Say you are living in North Carolina, USA and you see on the news a monster hurricane has formed 300 miles east of Africa. Supercell cloud tops can easily reach 60,000 feet, twice the height of Mt. Everest.
Why do I have to wait for the edge of it to get to the southern coast of South Carolina before I even see the very top of the storm only? This is the same thing with all of those ships disappearing beyond the horizon except in reverse. If the earth was flat, you should have no problem seeing a mega storm the size of Texas near the Bahamas.
And of course, if you spot a hurricane, you will see the top of the hurricane first. Then as time goes by as it moves toward you you will see more and more of the storm.

That you don't understand how refraction can raise the apparent view of distant objects making the horizon farther is your problem, not mine.

Maybe with the right telescope or zoom lens, you can see the storm earlier.

That you don't understand that fact is hilarious. That you are avoiding answering what the observer height is for YOUR Salton Sea example makes it apparent that you don't know. He is just making the point that the line of site is much farther if the view is not from ground level. While this is true, there are curvature calculators that can account for the observer height an tell how much should be obscured at a certain distance.

Light refract in a medium, dont waste your time with these morons. I have a degree in Physics and Pure Math. This is a non issue...

Give me the observer height for YOUR example and I can show the math. Can't give math with a missing variable. 8" per mile squared only shows the amount hidden qhen the observer is at zero feet with their head on the ground. Maybe that is how you look at the world but that is not the case for most people.

You can see the top of the storm first when it crosses the horizon line; the rest is hidden beyond the curvature. No light issues if you can see the top, right? Then as time goes by you start to see the darkness of the rest of the storm that was hidden beyond the horizon of the beautiful curved earth!

It seems that it's you who doesn't get it.
The height of the observer is miniscule in comparison to the perceived difference in observable distance.
Plus, the 3 mile experiment had marker poles, six feet tall at each end so suck it.
