Quoting: Zalinsky Yes, there are a zillion plastic bags in the ocean, and yes, it is an absolute tragedy. I am 100% in favor of cleaning plastic bags from the ocean and stopping additional pollution. But guess what? None of the plastic bags we use end up in the ocean. Every part of America (and Europe) has sophisticated wastewater treatment. Nothing is being dumped in the ocean. The only plastic bags going into the ocean are the ones blowing off someone's boat. 95% of the plastic bags and all the other shit come from 10 rivers, all of which are in Asia and Africa: The results, published last November in Environmental Science & Technology, show that rivers collectively dump anywhere from 0.47 million to 2.75 million metric tons of plastic into the seas every year, depending on the data used in the models. The 10 rivers that carry 93 percent of that trash are the Yangtze, Yellow, Hai, Pearl, Amur, Mekong, Indus and Ganges Delta in Asia, and the Niger and Nile in Africa. The Yangtze alone dumps up to an estimated 1.5 million metric tons of plastic waste into the Yellow Sea. [link to www.scientificamerican.com (secure)] So, do-gooders of the world, if you ACTUALLY want to do good and not just FEEL like you are doing good, go talk to the Chinese and Indians and Africans and impose your idiotic rules on them. America is cleaner now than it has been in 100 years, so maybe take your boot off my throat and let me use a plastic bag. the cruise ships and others literally dump their trash out at sea to save on disposal fees. and the land lubbers get the blame. there are a shit ton of videos just at YT alone.. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 38556236 United States 01/31/2021 08:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | here's a suggestion. Buy your own reusable bags.and keep re-using them. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79324482 Or better yet buy food grade (safe to store food in) HDPE plastic 5-gallon plastic buckets with handles (such as those made by Leaktite) and use them as grocery bags. You can wash them with soap and water and reuse them for the rest of your life! If you tie it to a hand truck with a bungie cord you have your own shopping cart. Tape a sign on it that says, "This is my shopping cart. I will pay for these items at the register." And be sure you do! That way you also don't have to wipe down their shopping carts after a dirty diaper kid sat in it or an ungloved person pushed it. You can stack two 5 gallon containers on top of each other on a hand truck. You can also use them to store food in, with airtight lids to keep insects out. Because they are plastic, rodents could chew through them, but the airtight seal would prevent them from smelling the food and being attracted to it in the first place. |

They are the perfect medium for their eggs and it is really a big problem in many areas . Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79368329 From the warehouses out . This was proven clear back in the 70s . It has not changed . Our local newspaper has flame retardant on t, the bags don't. Superior for lighting the woodstove. It wasn't a full dozen tomatoes rolling down the driveway, but a couple of that came out of the produce bag. Quoting: Zalinsky Ah hah! Just as I suspected! (Because of your reputable intelligence and insight, the fun of busting your chops over the hyperbole was too good to pass up.) All right then. You're off the hook, Zalinsky. Damn good question. The trouble isn't even fruit, it's when something in a glass container tumbles onto the unforgiving concrete. Quoting: Zalinsky Valid point. Paper grocery bags are structurally inferior to their now-extinct plastic counterparts. Another poster remarked earlier that they always double-bag. Seems the smartest option for paper. |

That is really fucking up our world, I don’t think we will undo the damage already done for hundreds of years. I have recycled over 100 million pounds of plastics in one of my careers Plastics are an incredible material but we will really need to do the right thing , thin plastic materials, thin gauge, are a nightmare to recycle, thicker products are much easier to convert to a geometry suitable for reprocessing . If you heat plastic in an oxygen free environment, you can distill the plastic back into oil. Rubber tires too and then you get carbon black and steel belts to add to the recycling money. I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you. Slake Blake |

No, RUbber tires are crosslinked with Sulfur atoms. There is no chemical or distillation method to undo that. They hit them with liquid nitrogen and then grind them up, producing crumbs of rubber and of course the steel belts. The rubber crumbs can be used to make running tracks or roads. Plastics might be recyclable though. But they don't get distilled. Worst case is you feed it into an oxygen fed plasma furnace and create a syngas, which can be cleaned up and used as either fuel gas or as feedstock to chemical synthesis reactions.
