So we sold all of our soybeans to China. We really did... now we have to buy them from other countries at massively increased prices. Because we are a market economy (cough, cough), we won’t actually run completely out because, as the article states, prices will get so high here in USA that it will curb demand.

I am not big into soy, but it is used to feed chickens... which I do like, so expect to see prices of chicken and many other products that need soy to go up.

And soy is a harbinger of what can happen with other crops if we are not careful and we allow China to buy our food... we will not be able to afford anything, if we can even get it.

“Soybean sales to overseas buyers are set to exceed the government’s estimates for the whole season as early as next month, according to Chicago-based consultants AgResource.”

“The rising demand from China means American farmers will need to plant more corn and soy, Dan Basse, an analyst at AgResource, said at the Paris Grain Day conference. “We’re looking at planting every arable acre, and it’s still not enough to meet demand.””

Problem is we are exporting a raw product in many cases. Much of this product is turned into products with a higher economic value.

We should be exporting tofu, soy sauces and other soy products. The bi-products can then be used as animal food and/or composted back into the soil as compost/organic matter/fertilizers.

properly marketed and produced to conform to asian tastes we could put Americans to work and still profit significantly from the asian markets.

The US has the capability (especially if Brazil and a couple other countries cooperate) to maintain a first world status, eliminate food insecurity here and build a world class economy but the focus must always be on America first and not just profit..

that's the interesting thing - somehow america is for sale.

iowa made it illegal for foreign nationals to own farmland, yet somehow chinese own farmland in states like oklahoma or arkansas.

how in the hell is that happening. these politicians sold everyone out

However, if you read the ingredients, you can avoid soy in your food. You may have to give up your favorite brand for a different brand, to avoid eating soy, but I guess it’s a choice. Support big soy or change brands.

As much as I loathe John Bolton, he said this in his book about Trump:

In an excerpt published on Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal, Bolton wrote that Trump was "pleading with Xi to ensure he'd win," adding that "he stressed the importance of farmers and increased Chinese purchases of soybeans and wheat in the electoral outcome."

Xi got all our soybeans, Trump got screwed... and now the American people just got screwed too.

My family farms soy beans. There is literally a field next to my house they grow them in. They are not "all" sold to china. Most of the ones grown around here are milled and manufactured in to products here locally.

Impossible to have a thread with intelligent responses.

You obviously did not read what I wrote - I explicitly wrote about the use of soybeans in the USA.

Yes, we have already sold all of our 2020 crop and will have to import soybeans from other countries to meet our needs until the next crop is harvested.

No... an absolutely essential crop that is used for many purposes. Without soybeans, this country is in serious trouble. Way too many low information GLPers out there. You have it somewhere in your mind that soybeans are bad... and think you are qualified to comment.

when did this happen, the transaction, under whom?

do you still remember John Boltons book where he mentioned that Trump will sell to Chicoms the soy-beans and that will confirm he's their puppet?

that was in January last year

Trump is out of office

“We used to say that, if you go into the countryside, one out of every three rows of soybeans is traditionally shipped to China, which is extraordinarily substantial.”

On average, the US exports $28 billion worth of soybeans globally, $14 billion of this goes to China.

Soybeans have traditionally been the second-largest crop grown in the US.
