Question for car tards...automatic ransmission |
Die lemon User ID: 2089581 United States 01/25/2021 06:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Question for car tards...automatic ransmission I put a new yoke into my Ford truck this past weekend. Since I was on the side of a road on dirt and sand and rain/snow were threatening I did two things I am concerned about. I slapped some grease (lithium wheel bearing type - red) on the inside splines of the yoke and now I'm wondering what is stopping it from mixing with the trany fluid and what consequences I should expect if it does. I used about two finger-fulls and wiped away about one fingerful. The other thing is I forgot to shake the Loctite before bolting on the rear yoke to the dif. I'm not too concerned about that, though as I'd rather roll over than buy and install a new (wrecking yard) transmission.
It's raining now and will snow tonight. Should I take the yoke out and wipe the grease off? |

Considering the crud that you would usually find inside a trans, a little bit of grease isn't gonna make a big difference. |

It won't hurt a thing. I've even used that when assembling valve bodies to hold check balls in place. Transmission fluid is highly detergent, so it will dissolve and have no effect in that quantity. |

Yeah, caught me. Top Ramen and cabbage too. [ link to downshiftology.com (secure)] |

Nothing to worry about. |

I don't think I would assemble with lithium red but in a pinch I might, "trans-gel" is my goto for that. B How did you get the rear yoke off on the side of the road? Did it have a locking nut? Many things adjust the pinion pre-load with the torque of this nut... ie crush sleeve. Also many specs show the nut as single use. If me I would just get a nut and seal to keep. It will leak and or sing if it gets loose. Then change it.. in the spring. PoliceYourOwn |

Red is not lithium. What are you worried about?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77578628 Red is "chassis" grade and some of it has lithium. I have assembled countless engines with Lubriplate 105 White lithium. But how much lithium can get on clutch packs until it's an issue is a question I have no answer to but I know there are limits for sure. I know as a dealer tech one day I put a tube of Extreme Pressure Concentrate from BG in a new 5 speed Mitsu Starion and it was just like removing all the synchros completely as soon as I started it.... bad. I had to rinse the thing out with varsol before it would shift. PoliceYourOwn |
