I think this is nice.




We should use technology to look for ways to help our poor.


Yes there will be issues since most homeless have mental health problems.



But... that should not stop us from trying.

The German city of Ulm has unveiled futuristic insulated sleep pods for the homeless on cold winter nights.



Two of these "Ulm nests" were positioned in Ulm, 75 miles west of Munich, earlier this month. The pods give homeless people an emergency place to sleep as colder weather has blanketed much of Germany.



These small shelters are positioned in parks and other strategic areas. Each pod can accommodate two occupants and is made of wood, steel, and plastics. Thermal insulation surrounds the pod's interior while fresh air circulates, allowing occupants to survive cold winter nights.



From the initiative's official Facebook page, they said Ulm nests "are equipped with solar panels, which allows (at least) energy neutral use during the day."

The initiative said each Ulm nest is connected to their internet of things network that alerts the Caritas Ulm-Alb-Donau charity association or Ulmer Nest about overnight stays. The next day, charity members will direct occupants to the city's homeless service, ensuring they will have the care to get them off the streets.

Half-assed attempt at empathy.

How about round them up, delouse them, put them in some real clothes and give them a barracks, counseling, rehab and job leads?

Fix these people, they need real assistance not street coffins for fucks sake.

It's a trap! The unsuspecting homeless person climbs in, pulls down the door, and the trapdoor in the sleep platform opens. Puffs, he's gone. Dropped straight down into the underground receptacle where is later disposed of.

Then Germany can say they helped all those lost souls and solved the problem of homelessness.

I have had long held beliefs about the right the walk the earth and be left alone in public spaces. Not to mention being able to walk around the earth without be harassed about borders and such. It's a libertarian thing.

People should be allowed to live on public lands. That is like our birthright as humans ... a default ...

It's one thing to insist that a person gets a job and follows a routine and own or contractually rent property to GET AHEAD and BE SOMEONE ...

but I really think it's a sin that we can't LEGALLY ... live camping. And we can't. There's really no where in this country you can camp legally without a limit on duration or use permits.

Even our European ancestors had to deal with restrictions on hunting and fishing on "public" lands that practically killed most of them.

There have to be public/free spaces. It's an affront to our species that we can't - realistically and legally - exist in a natural state as best we can, and survive off the earth.

So we can't camp for free, we ahve to wear clothes, we have to prove we raise our kids a certain way, we have to do all these things ... and some folks just CAN'T or WON'T. They shouldn't have to.

This kind of thing is a win-win. For people needing a night of shelter no questions asked, and for who would prefer they not sleep on their stoop.

It solves a specific problem directly, without the politicking, and a lot cheaper than if we moralize and demonize and do the rest.

This is where Europe has it all over us.

I just made a run downtown for pizza ... at the behest of my schooling-from-home kids.

Sat in the car for about 5 or 6 minutes because the homeless guy out front was extremely ... active ... and I wanted some other people to walk by first.

On the way out, I got suckered out of two slices of pizza by a big black lady who asked for money to get some soup from the chinese place. She said she wouldn't use it for drugs and I believe her ... she was overweight, not at all druggie-looking, but definitely not all there mentally. I didn't have any, so I gave her a couple slices.

She said she sleeps behind Walmart, which is about a mile down the main drag, in a tent.

I asked her if she has tried to contact women's services, she claims she has and they didn't have a place for her.

It's cold. They need to do something. These people are going to freeze to death. If they won't go into shelters it's because they want to be left alone.

At least with the pods, they wouldn't freeze to death.

They cost $5,000 a pop. For 2 people. No mention was made about a toilet. Supreme disinfection will add to the cost after each use.

This might be the dumbest idea the Germans have ever had. Well other than putting the car battery under the rear of the seat in a Mercedes.

They could be made for so much less.

SLow release of Nitrogen and they just fall asleep...for good.

They're futuristic microwaves. They will cook the fools who enter them, then the rest of the homeless will feast on them.
