I do feel sorry for this single mother, but at the same time, this is a direct result of government welfarism. If you rely on it too much, it will only keep you stuck in a hole. I understand where she is coming from. I was a single parent less than 10 years ago and got laid off from my job that paid only $15hr. I had no college education and a child to raise on my own. I did receive a few months of welfare checks, unemployment money, and food stamps.
But, I used that low to better my life and career decisions. Fast forward to today, I am finishing up my second college degree with other work related certifications and looking to buy my first house soon. I am now making close to $100,000 a year from $32,000 a year just a few years back. If I can do it, any one can. There are programs out there to get yourself out of the whole, such as government grants for education and undergraduate degrees. I did not want to rely on the government for help. Minimum wage is not meant to make a living off of. It's mostly used for teenagers who are entering the work field.
