You don't really need food to survive just water and some skill in hunting and gathering. A good plan is to get a few rabbits maybe 2 female and 2 males. They breed like crazy and after a few months you will have an unlimited supply of food. Stock up on liquor (or get what you need to make your own) that is the most important item in a SHTF scenario. For true survivors food is down on the list you can always find food if your hungry enough even dandelions are very good item and those grow all over.

I think this is something that is a bit of a misnomer.

It may have been true in earlier times but not so much now.

The thing is, everyone says "i'm fine, i'll just go hunt". Yeah, you and a million other wanna-bes that are all going to pour into the "wild".

Most of them with skills picked up on youtube.

In a world where humans have already wiped out like 90% of the wildlife.

Perhaps in this case you are a skilled woodsman, but for most people this will end very badly.

The rabbit thing I think is a good idea. I don't have any myself, but have a friend who does, and they do multiply very quickly.

Not sure if I got any I would be able to (or my family would allow me to!) kill Cottontail for lunch though.

Rabbit starvation is a thing though, its a very lean meat so as I understand it if you eat just that u do end up lacking fats.

As a farmer and rancher ALL of my adult life let me say ... Good luck with this heading to the hills, and TRYING to stay alive BS ... most will starve in short order.

Raising livestock is what I do, and it is hard, dirty, expensive, and sometimes heartbreaking. If you do not have experience raising and growing crops, and livestock, your learning curve is going to be horrible and expensive. Leading to the death of your stock and yourself.

You do not just jump into this sort of experience ... it takes a lot of time and money to get started. AND, since the covid panic ... the supply of animals has tripled in price, and there is a severe shortage of stock for sale.

A few questions for each of you that THINK you can just jump into raising and culling, butchering, your own stock.

How long does it take a chicken to get to butcher weight? How about a beef? A pig? A rabbit?

What temp does a baby chick need to stay alive until it is feathered out?

How much water does a sheep need per day?

What animal does not sweat?

How many eggs does the average laying hen lay over a years time?

Yep, start now and do your research!! I had retired but the covid, and all the culling by the BS gov. put me back in to it full time, again.

Just the expense of fencing will break most people now days. Fencing you say??? Always, ALWAYS, always have your security up before buying any animals!! Fencing keeps them and you safe!

The most important question is, After all the expense of raising these animals can you honestly, truthfully, be able to shot and butcher them??? Do you know how to take care of all of that meat without losing most of it?

I truly wish more people would have done this 15 to 20 years ago ... and we would not be where we are now.
 Quoting: grannyB

Thank you for speaking truth.

Along those lines, are you comfortable with the makeup of your neighbors that they would not try to steal from you?

And, if not , how would you protect your family or livestock?

It takes a group of people to survive. My friend buys half a side of beef from a local rancher.

They are being told it will cost them much more this year because the rancher says the local butchering co. will nor take them as a customer (although they have had a long term relationship), so they will have to transport the cattle from Ohio to Indiana for processing.

short summary

700 percent increase in beef to China, dont have enough bean selling to China, USA admits we dont have this food anymore

Iceage Farmer. Some force in FDA allowing China to take everything we have right now. Will not have grains to feed animals. Other countries restricting exports, not US

They said because Ukraine but truthfully this was around the start of Americas sharp drop in food quality standards. I grew up on a farm.

I haven't slaughtered and butchered an animal since I was a teenager...does not mean I forgot how to do it.

I grew up hunting and fishing to stock a deep freeze every year....we always had our proteins.

We raised 100 chickens at a time...had cattle and horses and goats. If you turn your nose up at eating goat, you are kinda stupid...it's good eats.

I live inside the city limits now and there are all kinda stupid regulations about having chickens and livestock which is a shame....I would love to have a couple dozen laying hens and a few goats to keep the grass and weeds cut down....

I can still grow a garden and I do but the city get's all weird when it comes to animals.

The really irritating part is I live next to the city park and all the animals like to come down and feast in my garden...and I can't do anything about it. I went to a city hall meeting and told them if they didn't do something about the deer, I was going to poison them since I can't discharge a firearm in the city limits....

Who wins in this ................the chinese.

Can't you see it.

Can't you stop it?

Why do you go along?

This is nothing more than an extension of the gas chambers of nazi germany only on a global scale and with many many nw advanced methods only this time it isn't just for one ethnicity...it is all of humanity. God please help us.

Maybe its just my suspicious mind, but I found this dubious too.

My question always is all these "mass cullings".

Are they actually killing the animals in a transparent manner, as in, the farmer actually watches them kill and bury the bodies right there?

Cos the impression I am getting is some random gov letter agency is turning up, saying "you are in a flu zone, these animals need to be culled."

Then they take them away to some undisclosed location where they promise they will be gassed.

But does the farmer or public actually get to see all these carcasses being disposed of?

Cos in my mind I am thinking "they are taking these animals, slaughtering them, then canning/preserving/storing the meat (or even the live animals in battery cages) for some future use".

And as someone pointed out, its mostly just EU, China and US that are doing this. Of course Africa/etc may not have outbreaks or may not detect them.

But still, something doesn't sit quite right with me about these mass disposals of crops/food animals.

My gut says they are taking it all to do final stock-piling of the underground shelters before imminent catastrophe. Its way out I know, but just a feeling.

In my city limits we can use a bow and arrow to kill deer. Just no fire arms. Live in the country now. You should think of moving.

Re: Rest of world locking down food supply, we are selling to ours
I have a dairy cow and a couple of Angus for beef reserve plus chickens, ducks, and geese on my 5 acres.

Stocked up on animal feed recently. No real price increase over last year.

For my cows, I buy round bales of hay that weigh over 1,000 lbs. at $65/ each. That's a lot of cheap food for a cow.

If you have a bit of land, it's better to BUY feed for your cows instead of trying to grow all your own feed. The animals will provide wonderful manure which they spread for you along with milk and meat.

The best thing that I have found to increase the food supply is to IMPROVE the soil. Good soil full of nutrients means nutritious veggies.

BTW, to maximize calories/square foot from your garden, focus on root crops and squash. I planted Cucuzza squash and filled my deep freezer last Summer. It grew like Jack's Beanstalk and the fruits are HUGE.

Animals on the hoof mean meat that needs no preservation. Just slaughter a duck or chicken when you need to.

I planted Jerusalem Artichokes, aka "fartichokes", on a plot of land in the Fall. They look like sunflowers (which they are) and require almost no care. They will grow back every year from the same plot. You can harvest and prepare them like potatoes.

BTW, my Grandma fed a family of 8 through the Great Depression on one half acre with a garden, chickens, and a milk cow. She even raised sunflowers for her chickens and never bought feed.

The time for prep is NOW!

Didn't the Bolsheviks sell Ukraine's food supply for profit while using terror famine to eradicate the bourgeoisie class.

Neo-Bolsheviks run the US and Whites are the neo-bourgeoisie.

Forgot to add, Gardening When It Counts by Solomon, is the BEST survival gardening book I have read.

Ref the guy with the deer eating his garden, suggestions:

1. Electric fence. Single strands high enough so the deer cannot jump it.

2. Crossbow or air rifle in .30 cal with suppressor. Of course, watch out for game laws, seasons, etc.

3. If SHTF and game laws don't apply, deer are easy to snare. Leave a hole in the fence with a snare for the neck.

BTW, when I was a kid, Granny had a farm (that was the OTHER Grandma). Her neighbor had a bean field.

Pop asked him if he shot and killed the deer that were eating his beans.

Neighbor replied, "Don't know how many I wounded, but I 'et 26".

Very productive bean field.

When I was a kid, there was a neighbor from Germany who survived WWII and the Russian invasion.

She was 8 years old. She and her mom survived in the burned out basement of their home.

At night, they went to the forest and cut leafy branches for the rabbits they were raising in that basement. They also searched for root vegetables that had been missed during harvest. That was the food they survived on.

They were never found by the Russians. Escaped to the West.

Intermittent fast and you won’t need much food. Look around and see how many overweight people there are. Most overeat everyday. And then throw away food also. Buy inky what you will eat. Have some bottles of vitamin and minerals on hand. Those will last quite a while. Buy lard and coconut oil etc for a fat source. It’s cheap. Lots of calories in a spoon full. Get some large bags of sugar and salt for electrolytes. No salt is a good and cheap source of potassium.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79543875

Most are overweight because they eat junk food and not fresh food
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46108084

It’s also constant grazing that will cause a person to be overweight. Even with fresh food.

Yes, and most have no access to water, no wells, so many will be shocked when they turn on their spigot and nothing comes out.

I grew up in the city but our home had been a farmhouse way back when the Wright Brothers first started out. It had a huge underground cistern in the backyard.

Oh, you rich people are so spoiled. You expect slaves to grow, harvest, and prepare all your meals for you. You just take food out of the package and eat. And you complain that it's too expensive?

LOL, ingrates.

Hey, whip those slaves, work them twice as hard. Hey, get them to make everything else for you too. Spank them if it's not affordable, especially if you're too lazy to work.

Re: Rest of world locking down food supply, we are selling to ours
U.S. wheat growers are able to produce more food than will be consumed here in the U.S. Having said that, the heart breaking flooding and freezing of America's heartland these past several years has decreased stores of some commodities like corn and soybeans. Weather catastrophes happen in farming. It's a part of life, but the tragedy of America's heartland farmers has been largely ignored by national media. With regard to wheat however, the US has been fortunate to have enjoyed several years of big harvests.

Now, should we sell to China, our enemy? Farmers in the western US have been marketing wheat to Pacific Rim countries, including China for at least 15 years and probably more. China's crops have failed big this year, and the people are starving. Is our "war" with the Chinese people or the Chinese government? For me, I blame the Chinese government and don't wish any thing bad on the vast majority of Chinese people. If we have more than we can eat, what's wrong with selling and helping to keep Chinese people from starving? It supports the US economy, and does the morally right thing as well.

Finally, on the GMO concerns, yes, the US wheat industry did jump on the GMO train about 10 years ago when higher yields were being delivered. But then Pacific Rim buyers, and particularly the Japanese, stopped buying US wheat that was GMO. A couple of years of a substantially decreased market for wheat convinced many wheat growers to abandon GMO seeds. GMO is pretty much disfavored by most wheat growers except the huge corporate farms.
