Most Americans have no idea what the (R) or (D) stood for when they were founded, nor why we have a 'left' or 'right' wing/side, or what liberal and conservative meant when first used, compared to how they are used today.

The left/right paradigm was based on what side of the table someone sat during the French revolution. Those that wanted more individual freedom and liberty from the State sat on the left - they were the 'liberals'. Those that wanted to keep the current power control over the people, sat on the right - they wanted to conserve the liberties of the people in favor of the State.

This is how the left/right - liberal/conservative was discussed until the leadup to WWII. The media was itching to get the US war machine in gear and a potential president named FDR ran on the left-wing, liberal side as an anti-war, anti-big government Democrat and he won. As we all now know, that was ALL bullshit as he was a pro-war, pro-BIG government stooge and that, my friends, is how the left/right and liberal/conservative sides flipped.

In a classical sense, I am considered a Jeffersonian Democrat or a classical liberal. I believe in States rights and limited govt power over we, the individual. However, today, I am considered an extreme right-wing potential domestic terrorist because I just want to be left alone.

That being said, patriotism is Statist crap that is eerily similar to Socialist or Communist pro-party dogma while Nationalism is pro-individualistic beliefs in the same people to living in harmony behind certain borders.
