If you want a rimfire rifle with a little extra punch, this is a good model. it's a .22 WMR - .22 Magnum. Ruger makes an affordable model that I like. [link to ruger.com (secure)]

Get a Ruger 10/22 it is accurate out of the box and will not jam up with quality ammo. As for ammunition get Speer Velositor it is a gold dot bullet and is fast. Look it up.

Watched some videos about it, doesn't sound like that bad at all.

I wouldn't use a 22lr in battle.

I prefer 5.56. Not to small, not to big considering hauling your ammo supply on your back.

The thing about 22lr and shot placement.

If you have the time to make a perfect shot, ok you can get by with a 22lr. But in most self defense situations you won't have that time.

If two opponents of equal skill meet and one has a 22 and the other a 5.56, odds are the 5.56 will win. Given the split second reaction times. 2 shots of 5.56 versus 2 shots of 22lr in the box......

To each their own

I'm about to buy one, just let me know how good is it for hunting and maybe defense.
EDIT: Its mainly for exterminating hogs around the farm, they are causing me a lot of damage to fences and crops. For defense I already have 9mm and shotgun. In an emergency scenario it might help with aid of the other ones.

10/22 with a suppressor and subsonic ammo is damn near silent... there’s a lot to be said for not giving away your position in forest combat. Anyone you hit will bleed out...

Um, no. That won’t do jack squat.

If you’re going to get a rifle, at least get a .223
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79789999

no one ever volunteers to get shot by .22lr

it's way better than nothing!

OP, you need to practice with it. Shot placement is very important.

Also remember, that a .22lr is extremely unlikely to kill anyone immediately. You'll need follow up shots, plus the mindset that you'll probably have to engage your attacker hand to hand... at least he's weakened :)

25 shots, no hand to hand needed.

Ruger 10/22 or similar semi auto can do a lot of damage and if its all you can get then I would say go for it. If you have a magazine full of ammo you can use multiple on target shots to put your game down.

Its a good call, but not as simple as it sounds. They are VERY suspicious of anyone asking for guns. You gotta have the "right connections" in order to get something and get out alive.

Then just buy a 22 and use it to take out a bad dude with something bigger. Work your way up to an RPG.

I’m in the 10/22 crowd, but for hogs I’d use something bigger. Look for an AR platform, .223 isn’t that expensive, and it seems like everyone that shoots has one. I’d go for a .308 for those big hogs and deer.

Ruger 10/22- there are a lot of options available if you want folding stocks etc. As for hogs...even an AK47 won't put them down immediately but its likely to kill them vs the .22 which might just wound them.

I see... the thing is, getting good firearms or high caliber here in Brazil is something close to impossible. The .22 is the one I can buy now and afford it.

Understood. If that’s the case, get what you can.

Smith and Wesson makes a decent 22LR rifle (M&P Sport).

You are gonna need a 25rd magazine and plenty of well placed shots to kill a hog with a .22lr

We have hogs here, I use a Ruger .44 magnum carbine and sometimes it takes more than one shot.

If you get a perfect shot that penetrates the brain, that would be effective, however most people will not get that shot. Shooting a 200-400lb hog with a .22lr and making it suffer is just fucking cruel. You should use an effective caliber that will kill it regardless of whether you get a perfect shot.

Another vote for Ruger 10/22
It just works

Comes with 10 rd drum mag, but you can get 25 rd banana mag if you need to lay a lot of lead.

Both my sons learned on that gun.

OP
I have owned the Ruger American compact, in 22mag for 7 years.

It is a bolt action rifle with a 9 round magazine.

I have a 2-7 power scope on it.

It shoots 1/4" groups at 25 yards.

The 22mag works great on any animal up to 50 lbs.

And can work on much bigger animals with specific shoot placement :)

It's a wonderful rifle. And it would be my choice, if I could only keep one.

You dont need to hunt boar for a survival scenario. Cause its more likely there wont be any electricity so youll have to dress and eat whatever you catch onsite which would be better as squirrels and rabbits.

PLUS .30wcf is an obsolete round in an obsolete lever gun and it 4 dollars a round for decent ammo .

.22lr is still around and still relatively cheap.

That ruger mkIV with an rmr and decent ammo will drop a muffer if you can shoot HALF way decent and put food on the table.

Even boar , if you hit the boar right behind its front plate and get a heart shot .22lr os putting out its lights.

If not run up for 2 quick followups in the same spot which you shouldnt need to do again if youre a decent shot

If the hogs are over 100lbs you need at LEAST a .223, but better off with a .243 or a 6.5 Creedmoor. Hogs have an extremely robust rib cage and don't go down like most animals of similar size.
