Cyclone Yasa: Fijians hunker down from category five storm !

11:10, Dec 17 2020

People in Fiji are being warned the window of opportunity to prepare to be hit by the powerful Cyclone Yasa is closing.

Evacuation centres have opened with the category five storm expected to make landfall Thursday night.

At least 600,000 people lie in the path of the cyclone which packs winds gusting up to 350km/h.

The Director of the National Disaster Office, Vasiti Soko, said people should either move into evacuation centres or secure their homes and clear loose items in their surroundings. Soko warned the winds would be destructive.

Cyclone Yasa hours away from Fiji, could swamp entire islands

Severe Cyclone Yasa is just hours away from potentially unleashing mayhem on Fiji, with warnings that the storm could swamp entire islands.

The category 5 tropical cyclone is currently gunning straight for the Fijian region with sustained wind speeds of 260km/h and gusts hitting 315km/h. It's also causing 12-metre waves, which are significant for the usually relatively calm tropics.

Weatherwatch says the storm is likely to make landfall at Vanua Levu - Fiji's major northern island - on Thursday evening. However, there is a chance that the cyclone could move in between Vanua Levu and Viti Levu - the main island - and therefore make no technical landfall.

"Either way, this storm is expected to pack a punch. This more eastern track (as earlier this week it looked as though Yasa maybe just west of Fiji) exposes many low lying islands south-east of Fiji's main islands to being completely inundated by Yasa's storm surge."

Cyclone Yasa: Powerful storm to make landfall tonight, Fijians told to expect widespread destruction.

17 Dec, 2020 01:37 PM

Tropical Cyclone Yasa is just hours from making landfall, with Fiji bracing for a catastrophic storm bringing towering waves, widespread flooding and destructive winds.

The powerful category 5 cyclone - currently the strongest on the planet - is due to reach Fiji's second-largest island, Vanua Levu, at 8pm.

Winds are now averaging 250km/h and gusting up to 350km/h close to the super-storm's centre.

Dangerous surges as high as 16m are expected to swamp coastal regions around high tide at 7pm, with the Fiji Meteorological Service issuing an urgent warning to anyone living near water.

At 11am the storm was located 215km north of Nadi and moving east-southeast at about 19km/h.

State of Natural Disaster declared for Fiji !

Fiji is now in State of Natural Disaster due to Severe Tropical Yasa.

Director of National Disaster Management Vasiti Soko confirms the declaration is effective for the next 30-days.

Soko says during this time as the situation develops, additional regulations may be implemented and the public will be made aware as and when necessary.

She adds once the curfew comes into effect from 4pm today to 4am tomorrow minimal movement is to be observed and people should not be putting up shutters as enough time has been given.

Soko also says those who need to move in emergency situations should contact police and military for assistance.

The Declaration means that there will be evacuation of people in their own interests, or in order to facilitate the necessary operations of the Police or Military personnel.

This includes temporary acquisition or control of any property, undertaking or land; the entering and searching of any premises and the supply and distribution of essential relief supplies, medical assistance, shelter or other resources.

Furthermore, the maintenance of the means of transportation by land, sea or air and the control of the transport of persons and resources, directing the movement of persons by land, sea or air in the interest of safety and

Prohibiting the unjustified exploitation of a disaster for profit.

Any person, body or entity who contravenes any order made by an officer of the Fiji Police Force or the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces in performing a role or discharging a responsibility under these Regulations commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $2,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or both.

Tropical Cyclone Yasa is currently making landfall on Bua, two hours ahead of its schedule, which was forecast and announced earlier today.

The Fiji Meteorological Services director, Terry Atalifo, has confirmed that it made landfall at 6pm.

Windy, a renowned weather site, says TC Yasa made landfall around 5pm.

Atalifo says the cyclone picked up speed and hence it made landfall earlier than anticipated.

“The eye has basically moved over the Western part of Bua province. The system moved a little bit quicker than anticipated, hence the system made landfall a little bit earlier.”

He says despite the two-hour difference given by the Fiji Meteorological Office, the important aspect was the warnings give.
