In the NBA it would be like the ref pointing out to a group of players and saying the "white guy" since there would be one in the group. If it was a group of black guys, the soccer ref wouldn't have said "the black guy".

If the ref is pointing to a group and says, the Indian guy or the Asian guy, is that offensive? no. Its a fact, the player is Indian or Asian, or black or white. Whats the issue?
What about "the tall guy" or "the fat guy" is that bad too?
