Earth directed c class cme just popped....it will impact earth....geomagnetic storms expected
Just had a notification pop up off the disaster prediction app that states “earth directed cme. A c class solar flare erupted at the southern sunspot group, directly facing earth. The ejecta appears wide and it will impact earth but with low density. Geomagnetic storms expected but few or no electrical disruptions expected” phew!

C-class is nothing. Bring on the x-class. I still remember two cycles ago, there were aurorae visible even as far down as Northern Italy! I watched the aurora from southern Germany, it was extremely impressive!

Re: Earth directed c class cme just popped....it will impact earth....geomagnetic storms expected
July 15, 2021:

Imagine an explosion on the farside of the sun so powerful, we could feel it here on Earth. It happened on July 13th. The debris emerged in a circular cloud known as a ‘halo CME‘:

Above: The July 13th CME imaged by SOHO coronagraphs

When space weather forecasters first saw this explosion, there was a moment of excitement. It appeared to be heading directly toward Earth. However, data from NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft indicated otherwise. The CME was heading directly away from us–a farside event.

Now for the interesting part: Although the explosion occured on the farside, separated from Earth by the massive body of the sun, it still peppered our planet with high-energy particles. The Energetic and Relativistic Nuclei and Electron (ERNE) detector onboard SOHO recorded a surge in radiation not long after the CME appeared:

Feb. 17, 2022:

New images from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) are giving us a better look at yesterday’s farside explosion. SOHO coronagraphs recorded the most dramatic CME in years:

No, there won’t be a geomagnetic storm. The explosion happened on the farside of the sun, so the CME is heading away from Earth. We dodged a bullet.

Some readers have asked “How strong was the underlying solar flare?” We don’t know. Solar flares are classified by their X-ray output, but there are no spacecraft on the farside of the sun with X-ray sensors. Best guess: It was an X-flare.

You might suppose that the farside of the sun is hidden from view. However, researchers using a technique called “helioseismology” can make crude maps of the sun’s hidden hemisphere. Their latest map reveals a huge farside active region:

Powerful Gamma-Ray Burst Made Currents Flow in the Earth

OCTOBER 17, 2022 / 3 COMMENTS

Oct. 17, 2022: Astronomers have never seen anything quite like it. On Oct. 9, 2022, Earth-orbiting satellites detected the strongest gamma-ray burst (GRB) in modern history: GRB221009A. How strong was it? It caused electrical currents to flow through the surface of our planet. Dr. Andrew Klekociuk in Tasmania recorded the effect using an Earth Probe Antenna:

Note: Data from STIX have been flipped (increasing counts go down) to ease comparison of the two waveforms. NWC is a VLF transmitter in Australia.
The blue curve is a signal from Klekociuk’s antenna, which was sensing VLF (very low frequency) currents in the soil at the time of the blast. The orange curve shows the gamma-ray burst recorded by the high-energy STIX telescope on Europe’s Solar Orbiter spacecraft, one of many spacecraft that detected the event. The waveforms are a nearly perfect match.

“I am a climate scientist at the Australian Antarctic Division–that’s my day job,” says Klekociuk. “VLF is my hobby. I started doing VLF radio measurements in the 1970’s when I was in high school. This is the first time I have detected a gamma-ray burst.”

Massive sunspot observed; Earth could face dangerous X-class solar flares
AR3110 sunspot can trigger X-class solar flares

Sunspots are here to create chaos yet again. Just a couple of days ago, solar flares from the AR3110 sunspot caused distortions in the communication systems and stalled rescue operations in hurricane-hit regions of the US.

Now, one of the largest sunspots of this year has been identified. AR3112 has the potential of spewing X-class solar flares which can cause massive radio blackouts.

Why does this story matter?
What makes AR3112 extremely dangerous is that it has the potential to set off strong X-class solar flares.

These flares are extremely intense and can lead to massive radio blackouts and can hamper communication facilities across several parts of the globe.

The emergence of the sunspot is already likely to bring about high solar activity over the next two weeks.

r. Xu Zhe, Prof. Yan Xiaoli and colleagues from the Yunnan Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have revealed how an active region (AR) evolves, re-configures the upper coronal structures, and eventually contributes to solar eruptions. Results were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Solar active regions rarely violate the Hale-Nicholson rule, but once these regions formed, they tend to be flare-productive. Using the joint observations from the New Vacuum Solar Telescope and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, the researchers investigated the evolution of an emerging anti-Hale region and its associated solar flare eruption.

They found that in NOAA AR 12882, magnetic energy and helicity were supplied to the corona by the new emergence and strong shearing motions of an anti-Hale bipole near the preexisting sunspot. A magnetic flux rope was formed simultaneously in the upper atmosphere with the ejection of magnetic helicity. The successful eruptions of this flux rope eventually produced C-class and M-class flares.

In particular, a cusp structure was observed to form near the post-flare loops, suggesting an interaction between the emerging anti-Hale region and the preexisting active region.

As the researchers claim, the flux emergence in a proximity to an existing sunspot and the anti-Hale orientation of a bipole, have been recognized as keys to produce strong flares. This AR 12882 hosting both characteristics at the same time is important for understanding the origin of solar flares.

Giant sunspot risks blasting Earth with powerful solar flares
2
Anthony Cuthbertson
September 1, 2022·

A massive sunspot developing on the Earth-facing side of the Sun has the potential to launch powerful solar flares capable of causing widespread disruption, astronomers have warned.

Sunspot region 3089 is one of four sunspot regions being monitored that have a notable flare probability, though it is the only one capable of triggering a powerful geomagnetic storm in the Earth’s atmosphere.

“This sunspot region was active a few days ago but has quieted down considerably. Remarkable as it does have a magnetic delta structure,” SpaceWeatherLive, which tracks real-time auroral and solar activity, stated in its latest report on the sunspot region.

The presence of a magnetic delta structure means it has the potential to release an X-class flare - the biggest type of flare.

X-class flares are rare occurences but can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs, according to Nasa.

“If they’re directed at Earth, such flares and associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can create long lasting radiation storms that can harm satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies and power grids,” the US space agency warned.

“X-class flares on 5 December and 6 December, 2006, for example, triggered a CME that interfered with GPS signals being sent to ground-based receivers... With advance warning many satellites and spacecraft can be protected from the worst effects.”

A huge sunspot that's rotating over the sun's Earth-facing side has developed into a beta-gamma magnetic classification, which is associated with solar flares.

The sunspot, named AR3068, was first noticed rotating into view over the sun's eastern horizon a few days ago and has grown since then.

Sunspots are regions in the sun's atmosphere that aren't quite as hot as the surrounding areas because of intense magnetic fields that prevent heat from rising up below the surface. Since sunspots are relatively cool, they also appear dark.

Dead sunspot' launches ball of plasma toward Earth
By Stephanie Pappas published April 11, 2022
It's expected to hit April 14, when you can expect more intense aurora.

A solar flare and coronal mass ejection were observed being launched from “dead” sunspot AR 2987 on April 11, 2022.
(Image credit: Royal Observatory of Belgium)

The "corpse" of a sunspot exploded Monday (April 11), triggering a mass ejection of solar material that is headed in Earth's direction.

The explosion comes courtesy of a dead sunspot called AR2987, according to SpaceWeather.com(opens in new tab). The sunspot explosion released loads of energy in the form of radiation, which also led to a coronal mass ejection (CME) — explosive balls of solar material — both of which could spur more intense northern lights in Earth's upper atmosphere.

The material in that CME is likely to impact Earth on April 14, according to SpaceWeather.

STAR BURST Gigantic sunspot is changing how Sun vibrates and may burst in days when facing Earth

Oct 25 2022

A HUGE sunspot on the solar surface is so large it's changing how the Sun vibrates.

The Sun's surface always vibrates because the material inside it constantly moves.Activity on the Sun can affect Earth depending on how big it is.

Right now, the Sun is at the start of its 11-year cycle and in a very active phase.

Around every 11 years, the magnetic field on the Sun flips.

That means the north and south poles switch and this can cause the Sun to behave erratically before settling down

Gigantic sunspot directly facing Earth ‘poised to explode’ today with strongest solar flare possible set to hit
Charlotte Edwards, Assistant Technology and Science Editor

Oct 5 2022 Updated: Oct 25 2022

A GIANT sunspot on the solar surface is set to explode, experts have revealed.

The large sunspot is almost directly facing Earth, which means there's a high likelihood of solar flares hitting our planet and causing a solar storm.

The K7RA Solar Update
10/21/2022
Sunspot activity took quite a plunge over this reporting week
(October 13-19). Average daily sunspot numbers declined from 114.9
to 57.3, while equivalent solar flux values went from 155.3 to
119.6.

Geomagnetic indicators were slightly lower, with average planetary A
index going from 13.3 to 10.6, and middle latitude A index from 10.4
to 8.1.

A new sunspot group emerged on October 13, two more on October 15,
another on October 16, one more on October 17, another on October 19
and one more on October 20.

I should note that the middle latitude A index for October 18-19 are
my own estimates. The Fredericksburg, Virginia magnetometer was
offline for a 24 hour period spanning both days.

The Wednesday forecast of solar flux shows a peak at 160 during the
first week in November.
