If you compare the price ratio of a new vehicle VS used one, it seems to me that Newer vehicles are cheaper. And it may have something to do with Manufacturers. I wanted to sell my Chevy Silverado 2002 model 1500 single Cab for $3000, total mileage 81000. Rust by doors, other than that it is in good condition. Nobody wanted to buy it. So I decided to keep it for another 3 years.

A 2002 Chevy is worth more than a brand new one as far as I am concerned. Quality control and just plain quality of GM products has went down the toilet, i highly recommend staying away from them and Dodge, and only buy the ford v 8 f-150 if you do buy an american made pickup. The Nissan Titan is by far the best bargain, thought they have chincy interiors and some fit and finish problems, it has a bulletproof engine and transmission that will go a half a million miles if you dont abuse it, and it costs less than a tundra which is known to have variable cam timing problems around 100 grand..

That ecoboost shit Ford is making is TOTAL garbage and will cost you a fortune to keep running. Trying to squeeze 400 hp out of small V 6 is a recipe for disaster.

BTW, did your Silverado have the 4.3 vortex engine or was it a V-8? I still have my 94 Sierra and thought the engine is worn out at 260 K it still runs, it just burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so.

I have a pristine 2002 F-250 with the 7.3 turbo diesel, no emissions, no need for DEF and they run forever. Pre-2007 Ford diesels are the hot ticket because the lack of emission controls.

Re: WHAT THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS GOING ON WITH USED CAR PRICES??!?
1. Almost all the cars made during the GFC fell apart
2. Pre GFC designed cars, are old enough now to need expensive repairs like whole exhaust worth more than the vehicle.
3. Car Auctions and Dealers to make money have created the 3k floor for piles of parts
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42021967

My car is almost 20 years old. I bought it used just a couple of years old. I spent 2k on it last year getting it back up in tip top running condition. Considering this is a well made car to start with, still in good condition inside and out, it was well worth the money spent. Even the service guy asked if I wanted to sell it. No thanks I like it. No car payment for me and I trust that car enough to take it across several state lines.

When buying used cars, it pays to do your research and don't base your choice on looks alone.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79557130

My mom has a 2000 Mercury Marquis with a 4.6 overhead cam v-8. In my opinion this is probably the best car EVER made, and I know my cars.

This was the second one she had, the first one had 480,000 miles on it when I sold it for her to get the "new" one, which had less than 70 k on it and was 2 years "newer". She paid three grand.

. That old Ford with 480 k on it was still purring like a kitten, literally, the only thing really wrong with it was the heater core finally rusted out and it shifted into second kind of rough. The most remarkable thing about it was even the exhaust and the paint on it looked virtually new.
No major repairs of any kind were ever made on it.

Re: WHAT THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS GOING ON WITH USED CAR PRICES??!?
A big part of the reason so many people are willing to pay high dollar for older cars these days is simple really, most people realize the modern cars are money pits.

If you have a pre-2000 vehicle the parts are cheap and there isnt any big electronic clusterfucks on them, and for the most part the average jackwagon shade tree mechanic can repair it himself..
This is what killed Mercedes Benz and BMW resale values BTW, you cant give them away. You can get one for pennies on the dollar, but it will end up costing you as much as you paid for it to get another thousand miles out of it too, generally speaking, because the reason the person unloaded it in the first place is because it needs expensive repairs. These cars WILL NOT START unless the windshield wipers are in working order, for christs sake.

Re: WHAT THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS GOING ON WITH USED CAR PRICES??!?
Another thing worth mentioning about used cars is in some cases the designs of cars 20 years old look more "modern" or at least AS modern as brand new ones. For instance, IMO the older version of the Nissan Titan I have looks more modern than the brand new ones, which look more like a 2000 era dodge. Same thing with the Tundra, the new ones look no more modern than the 2007.

If someone asks me what year model my truck is I can say it's 2 years old and NO ONE knows the difference, but it is more like ten.

Re: WHAT THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS GOING ON WITH USED CAR PRICES??!?
Supply / Demand

Most average people do NOT want to spend $35,000 to $60,000 on a new car, which is what the middle of the road vehicle costs today. Instead they look at the used market, which has driven the cost of used middle of the road vehicles through the roof.

Now if you can live with a bottom of the barrel vehicle one can find those used for a decent price ... an bottom of the barrel vehicles today are MUCH better vehicles than the ones they made back in the early 00's. Shoot, during the year end close outs this year I even saw Ford Focus's available NEW for $10,000.

(you have to go out to some place like AutoTrader.com and poke in a price, year, and milage limit to see them show up, but there were lot's of dealers selling them at those prices - dealers will NEVER advertise those prices in any mass advertising location, or even on their lots - have to ASK, since they don't want to rob their higher priced sales)

One can also go directly to the Auto Auctions, now that they are reopened, and bid on the used inventory ... which has it's own risks but if you know what you are doing the risks are minimal and you can buy the vehicle for several thousand less than the dealer is going to list it when he puts it on his lot.

Lots of way to skin the cat on this one, but Supply / Demand rules the overall pricing situation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79096761

Interesting, I didn't know about that method of shopping on AutoTrader.

To buy at the dealer auction I believe you have to have some sort of dealer ID or pay a dealer to work with you on it.

I just bought my daughter a Subaru Crosstrek 2021 Limted (top trim level) for 26500 plus tax and fee. A 2019 Subaru with 30 k miles they want 25990 !!! Makes no sense. Carmax was even higher for similar used subies
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76564156

Subaru is a piece of shit with a weak engine. Worst of all of the Jap cars.

They all have that boxer engine design that is fine for high performance high maintenance cars like Porsches, but who wants to be replacing an engine at 80-100k? That's your future and thats why the older ones are so high, they already had to replace the engine.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79264046

The boxer style is only in the WRX now, used to be in the foresters as well.

And you clearly have no clue what you’re talking about since Subaru and Tacoma are about the best vehicles as far as holding value goes. The WRX is stock 325hp. For a small car that’s quite powerful.

With 20 to 40 million unemployed and food line, one would think that Repo’s would be skyrocketing putting thousands of cars and trucks on the used car and truck market. Don’t loan companies want their money....
 Quoting: stuckpipe

No, the "loan companies" are banks and they print money out of thin air. They send the repo'd cars to the crusher if there isnt a market for it.

If you havent realized yet the banks are here to enslave us more than make money, they certainly wont sell you a cheap repo when they can get you to finance a 15- $30k used/new car.

Cash for clunkers and Obama happened.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74858174

I believe that was George Bush's responsibility.

You would be wrong. That was signed by Obama in June of 2009.

Re: WHAT THE H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS IS GOING ON WITH USED CAR PRICES??!?
New cars now cost too much money. A major piece of evidence that proves this is the fact that loan terms are getting longer and longer, even on low-end base models.

If the cars were cheaper, people wouldn’t need to stretch out the loan term so long just to be able to get the payments to fit in their budget. There was a time when people would finance for no more than 36 or 48 months as the payments were affordable.

What dealers want is people trading when they are underwater on their car loans, but the existing car needs repairs or maintenance that is going to cost the equivalent of three or four car payments or more.

The dealer will be only to happy to roll over the old car loan into the new one. The bank or lender makes more money, as the principal balance will be higher, the interest rate will also be higher. The F&I guy in the dealership makes money too, by funneling buyers into specific banks that want to write car loan paper, and there is usually a small commission for doing this.

The dealer wins again because they will be getting a used car that can be fixed cheaply and put out on the lot to expand their inventory of used cars. Because used cars are now in great demand, the dealer can jack up the price to make even more profit. The banks and lenders win too because the loans will be bigger.

The auto industry wins too, because it sells more cars.

The hapless consumer is left with a never-ending cycle of debt, and finding themselves on a treadmill of having to pay more for progressively less.

There is no money in seeing people buy relatively cheap used cars that they can fix and keep on the road. This is why used cars are getting so expensive now, and cheap but functional junker cars are hard to find.

Basically what you’re left with is a situation where you can pay through the nose for a new car for the next six, seven or eight years and suffer 30 - 50% depreciation in the first year of the car’s life. And then repairs after about the fourth or fifth year.

Or you can buy a used car at inflated prices and then pay through the nose for repairs and maintenance, because the mechanical and electronic complexity of cars even five years old makes them expensive to fix.

An associated problem, and this will become more apparent over the next five years, is that globalists want to get people completely out of the business of owning cars and into autonomous taxis, busses and trams to get around. All in the name of non-existent climate change, of course.
