See, there's your mistake. You said half the country, and it ain't.
It's city people snobs versus ordinary country folks. That is why the Founding Fathers made damn sure that America was a constitutional republic with checks and balances like the Electoral College and NOT A DEMOCRACY.
Otherwise city folks would lord over every homesteader in the territories.
