first off, and completely off topic, i'd like to propose that we stop calling ex-presidents 'President'. once they are out of office they should loose the title and as Highlander showed us, there can be only one.

now, to the topic, the first responsibility of the president is the safety and protection of the United States of America from invasion by enemies both foreign and domestic in order to preserve the Republic created by and guaranteed in the Constitution.

The Presidential Oath states his duty:

"I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
