Who is the band with the most (US) top 40 singles without ever having a number one hit?

You guys want a hint?

Hint #1: Virtually every song this band released featured strings (cello, violins, etc.)... except for their highest charting single, arguably their most well-known tune...

Good guess, but they actually did have #1 hits. One of the most popular bands in the history of popular music, actually.

Not a bad guess, though!

Not a bad guess, but they didn't have all that many singles reach the Top 40 (Billboard) charts.

The Monkees made a pretty sweet record called "Head" back in the 60's which most people never heard of, but if you like the psychedelic-era Beach Boys stuff I would highly recommend that album!

Yes, my brother had that album in the 70's.
Some hilarious tracks on there like "Dandruff"

Both good guesses! But both incorrect. Chicago for the reason listed above; although America did have a lot of Top 40 hits, so that's a really good guess. Kanasas, I can only think of one song of theirs, Carry on Wayward Son. Still, good guesses!

Bingo. Google says: "The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits (20) without a number one single of any band in US chart history. In 2017, the key members of ELO (Wood, Lynne, Bevan and Tandy) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

Yep!

"From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated twenty-seven top 40 songs on the UK Singles Chart, and fifteen top 20 songs on the US Billboard Hot 100.[10][11] The band also holds the record for having the most Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits (20) without a number one single of any band in US chart history."

Reminds me of Hawkwind. 1969 same year Pink Floyd started. Both are space rock banks. Hawkwind has only had one hit that got any radio time. Hawkwind is still going to this day.

ELO had so many great tunes, yet all I hear on local classic stations are "Evil Woman" and"Don't drag me down"....so tired of those songs.

Not much strings and heyday lasted longer than your hint, so not a great pick. And they did have US No. 1, but only one, which is somewhat surprising.

Okay, here's one for you that's worth at least 10 seconds of your time...(It's solo Jeff Lynne, but he was the main singer/songwriter of ELO and basically the soul of the band anyway)

This was a B-side of a single from ~1990. It's a really nice song, upbeat and super catchy!

Cheers for you, truthbomb77 cheers
