Re: $87 dollars for a HAM ????
In the past I have been a few times in Australia where I bought a half a ham leg of 5 kilo for 40 Australian dollar total. I now had a look at their prices and it is still 6,5 $ per kilo. So that ham of almost 4 kilo you bought would have costs in Australia at most 25 $..........

I don’t eat ham or pork products, so I had no idea how much these damn things go for.

As I stated previously, I don’t care that she spent $87. It’s the fact it’s $87 for HAM!

It’s a PIG.

HOLY FUCKING TITS

I mean, I bet it's delicious, but that's just a bit more than I'd be willing to pay for a ham. Shit, I wouldn't even want to pay half that.

I'd be better off getting a couple pigs and fattening them, butchering them, and making my own ham.
 Quoting: Irredeemable

I hear ya. I'm not sure all the work/time that goes into making a honey baked ham but I've made prosciutto a few times and I'd rather pay the $22 a pound like someone linked to above. That shit takes about 5lbs of salt, cover the loin in it, throw it in the garage for a month or 2, then cheeseclothe it and hang it for a year.

Re: $87 dollars for a HAM ????
I’m in the middle of cooking but had to post this.

In addition to a turkey, my wife bought a ham.

...a HALF of a ham.

I removed it from the fridge, set it in the counter, and peeled the gold foil back. I generally don’t like pork, but I tried a small piece.

It was very good.

As I turned it, I notice the label and almost had a coronary:

[link to imgur.com (secure)]

”FUCK ME!” I exclaimed. Very loudly.

My daughter jumped at my outburst. “What’s wrong, Dad?!”

”$87 fucking dollars for HAM, THAT’s what’s wrong!”

$87 for a HAM!! Not even a whole ham. It’s a HALF a ham!

My wife’s at the store picking up a couple small items we forgot.

....wait till she gets home.

I’m taking that $87 out on her ass tonight.

.
.
ps. I’m not pissed that she spent $87.

I’m pissed that she spent $87 on HAM!!!

It’s a PIG!

Re: $87 dollars for a HAM ????
Honey-Baked Hams are THE BEST spiral cut hams out there.

Really up-scale item which is always perfectly cut and cooked. They're ready-to-go and often a center-piece at the holiday buffet table.

I knew what you had when you cited price and half-ham size.

Your wife is one helluva gal... Don't ruin everyone's Thanksgiving by being a piker.

A full size Virginia Ham probably would cost more, then you have to cook it for hours after soaking it 24hrs to remove the brine flavor. The good ones come wrapped in a muslin bag. Cooking one right is a real art and unless you have a double or triple oven kitchen it's very hard to serve the ham and all sides so everything is just out of the oven warm.

Got a real pro kitchen? Not the stupid marble or granite top counters, but the real deal with several ovens baking and prep counters and storage for all the gear? Of course you don't.

Your wife is a treasure you surely don't deserve...

It's a wonderful time to be with your family and enjoy a fine meal. Why fuck it up getting resentful over a few bucks?
 Quoting: Lester 79652156

^^^^^ WISDOM ^^^^^

You’re right.

You’re absolutely right.

She’s an amazing woman. Amazing in every way. And you’re right that I DON’T deserve her. I’ve known that for 22 years now.

....yeah, it’s just a few bucks. The Universe has been very favorable to me this year, so I shouldn’t be upset.

But it’s not the $87 I’m pissed at.

It’s money I’d piss away going out to dinner for an hour, whereas this is a full day family dinner.

I’m just pissed that she spent $87 on HAM.

It’s like paying $25 for a hamburger, ya know?

Anyway, I need to get back to work.

Thanks for your post.

GLP needs more people like you.

Dummy... JFYI, if you go several weeks or a month early to The Honey Baked Ham Store, they sell 2nds... These are discounted first-quality hams that were not spiral-sliced to uniform thickness. If it's the money bothering you...

Don't like ham? We had one of these while my wife was birthing our firstborn at our home. The Midwife and her nurse-assistant were very appreciative of getting some good eats for the 12hrs they were with us. My sister who also helped out, made us a great breakfast of eggs and ham the next morning... Mom often served one of these with her turkey for Thanksgiving. Just excellent.

A half-ham spriral ham like you can get at Costco or any grocer is gonna be dry and meh. Pay twice as much for the Honey-Baked, but everyone loves them.

We used to do a smoked Turkey for Thanksgiving many moons ago, and I suppose some people cook a brisket for their side meal. Never had BBQ on Thanksgiving, but long-smoked pork, ham, poultry or beef can really be cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection!

I remember having some Colorado Mule Deer rump roast at my Uncle's one year...

Family is a magical thing. Too many people take their loved-ones for granted. Enjoy the day! America might just be seeing its last Thanksgiving...

A "Honey Baked Ham" Company ham is the best! I order a 1/4 ham every year, and even though they are expensive, you can't get better! No fussing with cooking, you can eat it cold, in sandwiches and all kinds of recipes. I even save the bone for a big pot of soup in the dead of winter!

You should love that woman, she only wants the best for her family, and these hams go a long way!

Re: $87 dollars for a HAM ????
Probably can find out how a ham is made in one of the Foxfire books. Quite an involved process requiring a smokehouse, much salt and brine solution, then lots of hanging in the smokehouse as the pork cures.

Probably described in length in one of the Foxfire books. Seems like some hams are even boiled before being prepared for curing. Lotta work, so they cost real money.

The only poor quality hams I've ever had are the grocery store spiral hams and some of the pork butt and shoulder hams that are too tough; some are very good, some too tough...

A hambone makes lots of nice soups! Potato soup, split pea soup. The last chunks of meat and fat off a ham go right in there too! Good eats for sure!
