The Consolamentum was the single most important rite of the Cathars. It could only be administered by one of the Perfecti, and it granted the same status to the Credent. Essentially, it was a spiritual baptism performed through the laying on of hands, which “consoled” the Credent, conferred via direct lineage leading back to Christ. The Cathars believed that the Holy Spirit descended upon the Credent, who opened the way to the divine world beyond (heaven.)

On the soul level, you are tasked with suffering repeated humiliation and the loss of possessions, pride, wealth, and sense of security. It all gets “tossed into the fire” or “held to the fire”-this is a necessary process and not the end for you.

Calcination, as defined by wiki:
