JPMorgan leads talks to bail out stricken First Republic

JPMorgan boss Jamie Dimon is reportedly spearheading efforts to craft a rescue deal for troubled US regional lender First Republic.

As First Republic's stock continues to fall, Dimon has held talks with executives at other big banks about how to boost the bank's cash reserves.

JPMorgan was one of 11 US banks that poured a total of £25 billion into First Republic late last week in a bid to restore confidence.

However that didn't help, and First Republic shares dropped another 47.1% yesterday, bringing this month's loss to 90%, as customers pulled tens of billions of dollars from their accounts.

Fed to either pause or hike rates by 25 bps on Wednesday

The Federal Reserve will meet Wednesday and, for once, the outcome is unclear. Many analysts are already calling the upcoming Fed meeting the most uncertain since 2008.

Investors are putting 60% odds on a quarter-point interest rate hike to just above 4.75% and 40% odds on no move at all.

A range of investors and analysts had expected the Fed to make an even bigger rate move until a series of high-profile bank closures and government rescues raised concerns about both the economic outlook and financial stability.

The European Central Bank raised rates by half a point last week in an attempt to balance the risk of lasting inflation against the risk of causing financial turmoil, even as Credit Suisse struggled.

Saudi National Bank loses over $1 billion on Credit Suisse investment

Saudi National Bank, Credit Suisse's largest shareholder, suffered a major loss of about 80% of its investment after Credit Suisse's takeover by UBS.

The Saudi bank owns 9.9% of Credit Suisse, having invested 1.4 billion Swiss francs ($1.5 billion) in the 167-year-old Swiss lender last November at 3.82 francs per share.

However, under the terms of the rescue deal, UBS is paying Credit Suisse shareholders 0.76 francs per share. The significant discount means Saudi National Bank lost more than $1 billion.

The Qatar Investment Authority, Credit Suisse's second-biggest investor, owns 6.8% of the bank and also nursed hefty losses, but declined to disclose any details.

Stocks in red after UBS-Credit Suisse deal

Markets are jittery despite UBS' acquisition of Credit Suisse, backed by a CHF9 billion guarantee from the Swiss government to cover potential losses from specific business lines.

Credit Suisse has opened down by over 60% and UBS is down by more than 10%. Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank and BNP Paribas are also trading sharply lower. Banks on the FTSE 100, such as StanChart, Barclays and NatWest, are languishing at the bottom of the UK index.

Bank bonds in particular are sliding after Swiss authorities decided to wipe out Credit Suisse's riskier bonds as part of the rescue package. AT1 bondholders suffered hefty losses as a result, with some investors retreating from them altogether.

The price action in gold and even Bitcoin suggests people are still anxious, expecting a possible transition from a banking crisis to a full-blown economic one.

Western central banks open swap lines to boost US dollar liquidity

The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, the Swiss National Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Bank of Japan are switching from weekly to daily auctions of dollars in an effort to "ease strains in global funding markets."

The daily swap lines between the banks will run at least until the end of April.

Lenders outside the US can use the swap lines to access dollars in exchange for their domestic currencies by pledging collateral at their respective central bank.

The announcement came hours after Switzerland's two largest banks, UBS and Credit Suisse, announced their merger.

The policy of daily dollar auctions across time zones was last used during the the 2020 Covid shock.

European officials are concerned the heavy losses imposed on Credit Suisse's shareholders and bondholders holding its alternative tier one (AT1) debt could increase stress in bank funding markets this week.

Storm hits 'really hard' for cleanup crews in Bay Area

Utility crews in the Bay Area were hard at work in dangerous conditions Tuesday, clearing downed trees in Boulder Creek, roughly 40 miles southwest of San Jose. Those in Boulder Creek worked amid downed power lines, heavy downpours and wind gusts over 70 mph. “If you live in the mountains, every 10 years or so [a storm is] going to be hard,” Boulder Creek resident Tyrone Clark told Reuters. “Sometimes, really hard.”

The area also experienced mudslides Tuesday, with Clark noting this is his first encounter with them in his 20 years in the area. “I’ve never seen it, and it’s just a lot of rain,” Clark said. “Sometimes there’s drought and sometimes there’s lots of rain. I think in the [1990s] we had [storms] that were like this, but I think the trees are just bigger now and [are] not handling the weight.” An evacuation order was issued for a short time in a section of Boulder Creek Tuesday, due to a blockage in a local creek rising water levels.

A likely tornado struck east of downtown Los Angeles Wednesday, damaging multiple buildings in Montebello, California. The Verdugo Fire Communications Center classified the likely tornado as a “weather incident” that was reported just a few minutes before 11:30 a.m. PDT. KTLA reported that part of a local roof was ripped off and debris was thrown around the area. No injuries have been reported so far, and the National Weather Service confirmed it will investigate the incident further. Officials and emergency crews across California are hard at work responding to the latest storm to slam into the Golden State. “We’re continuing to mobilize an all-hands-on-deck response to protect Californians during this latest round of devastating storms,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. “The state is working closely with federal and local partners to provide immediate relief and support the ongoing recovery.” More than 470,000 sandbags and 488,000 square feet of plastic sheeting were distributed across the state to help residents stave off floodwaters. Additionally, over 4,000 Caltrans employees are working across the state to respond to emergencies on the roads. State officials are also conducting damage assessments to determine if California meets the federal government’s criteria for a major disaster declaration.

Bay Area bomb cyclone strike ‘resembled that of landfalling tropical storm’

The bomb cyclone that slammed California brought intense wind and rainfall to the state, including the Bay Area. “The impacts from the event resembled that of a landfalling strong tropical storm – likely the closest San Francisco residents will ever come to experiencing that meteorological phenomenon,” AccuWeather Director of Forecast Operations Dan DePodwin said. Peak gusts in the higher elevations immediately around the Bay Area exceeded 70 mph on Tuesday, according to preliminary reports from the National Weather Service. One of the highest preliminary wind reports Tuesday listed by the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center was a 75 mph gust recorded near Lexington Hills in Santa Clara County. A gust of 73 mph was recorded near Del Rey Oaks in Monterey County.

“Tropical-storm-force wind gusts (39-73 mph) were reported for seven consecutive hours in Oakland,” DePodwin said. “Despite being vastly different in structure than a tropical system, the compact area of low pressure on radar resembled the eye of a hurricane as it moved onshore Tuesday afternoon just south of San Francisco.” Some of the greatest rainfall totals in the Bay Area were recorded in the Santa Cruz Mountains as well as cross portions of the North Bay. Some of the hardest-hit areas received 3-4 inches of rainfall, according to preliminary numbers from the NWS.

Numerous roads in Santa Cruz County were impassable and strewn with debris on Wednesday morning following intense wind and rain on Tuesday. Over 100 inches of rain has fallen on California mountain since November

California has been bombarded by atmospheric rivers, bomb cyclones and a few pineapple expresses in recent months making for one of the stormiest winters in recent history. The rainfall total at one weather station in the Southern Coast Ranges reached new heights amid the ongoing storm. Three Peaks, located in the mountains about 100 miles southeast of San Jose, has measured 101.45 inches of rain since Nov. 1, 2022, according to the National Weather Service office in the Bay Area. The weather station on the mountain is at an elevation of 3,362 feet, with the elevation contributing to the extraordinary seasonal rainfall total as higher rainfall amounts are common in the mountains compared to the lower elevations.

No end in sight for ski season at one California resort

Mammoth Mountain, located in the central Sierra Nevada, is having a ski season for the ages. With a total of 664 inches of snow so far this season, it has more than enough to stay open through the spring. But officials at the resort aren’t content with spring skiing. They plan to remain open well into the summer.

“We are stoked to announce that we will be open daily for skiing and riding until AT LEAST the end of July,” the resort stated in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “As always, we do not have a closing date set, but will plan to stay open as long as conditions allow. Sitting on one of the deepest base depths ever recorded at Main Lodge, it’s going to be some of the best spring skiing and riding we’ve ever seen.”

The mountain had received 18-20 inches of new snow as of Wednesday morning from the latest storm that moved through. Mammoth is now 5 inches of snow away from breaking its all-time seasonal record of 668 inches.

California storm reached bomb cyclone status near Santa Cruz

The storm that crashed into the central California coast on Tuesday afternoon underwent bombogenesis, a meteorological process more commonly known on social media as a bomb cyclone. For a storm to be dubbed a bomb cyclone, the atmospheric pressure must drop at least 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) in 24 hours. Tuesday’s storm blew this benchmark out of the water with a buoy in Monterey Bay, just south of Santa Cruz, recoding a pressure drop of 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) in just 17 hours. The storm’s ferocity also generated a storm surge of two feet along the coast of central California. The storm was so intense that it appeared to develop an eye on satellite, similar to what is seen in tropical storms and hurricanes, although this week’s storm was much different than a tropical system.

After being closed for weeks, one of California’s most popular parks is now slowly reopening. Yosemite National Park was a victim of February’s storm onslaught in the state, with snow piling as high as 15 feet in some areas. “It just wasn’t safe to welcome visitors,” National Park Service ranger Scott Gediman told AccuWeather National Reporter Emmy Victor. Now you don't have to take your electronics out of your suitcases at airports and you don't have to put your liquids in a silly little plastic see-through bag.... Either the surveillance has gotten SO INVASIVE that you don't have to do anything or they have decided to change the rules just to confuse the public further.... Eventually airports will be fully automated and you won't have to "go through security" because they can see EVERYTHING from the second you enter the door, while on the flight and when you leave....and they will track you to your home, your destination, and film and record you from morning to night... Now the BRITISH are making you walk in front of a CAMERA before you get on a flight and then in customs AFTER you leave a plane... THEY EVEN MAKE THE STEWARDESSES AND PILOTS do it! What are they afaid of that someone will morph from one form to another in the course of the flight? That someone will CHANGE from human to android or be replaced while in the air by an alien? WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR????

One stewardess stepped up to the camera and it turned RED and they wouldn’t let her pass and she had to go to another identical camera and stand and wait for it to ‘give her a green light’… ARE THEY LOOKING FOR REPTILIANS IN HUMAN FORM? Or androids or other aliens...

And these are 'special' cameras/scanners...probably AI or more than skin deep...

These "camera/scanners" were brought in by the British and set up at the desk where you get on the plane.... clearly scanning and photo graphiing using a tech not being used by the Americans at security.
