There are an astonishing number of people who prefer to be told what to do and what to think. Having to make their own decisions and think for themselves is a constant source of anxiety - what if they get it wrong? What if they pick the wrong course of action? What if they believe the wrong thing? What if they get in trouble for it?

Having a source of "authority" make all the decisions for them is a relief. If they do what they're told, they're safe, they're part of a group doing the "right" things and don't have the constant stress of wondering what they should do - someone else is doing that hard work for them.

The saddest part is most of them don't even understand why they behave the way they do. They only know that they feel better when someone stronger than them is in control.
