An old co-worker... A Sergeant of mine, just killed himself.
Not quite sure how it fits in my nugget just as yet.

I mean, The guy was a DICK! he actually influenced my career in a negative way, BIG-TIME.

He was a bit jealous of my path at the time... Was Unscrupulous! Directed me a couple of times to violate rights and do bad things. I never did them and he had it out for me after that.

Anyway... He ate a bullet night before last and the phone tree delivered the news to me. (It was an old buddy of mine that called me because, the department didn't keep up on numbers).

Well... Here I sit. Feeling bad that he got so low as to kill himself and, at the same time, not at all sad about it.

It's an odd feeling, Indifference....

Yep, it happens, I have had bad ones, good ones and just plain mixed up ones off themselves while on active duty and during retirement. The bad one's seem to always have it coming for them.

The good ones, it always sucks and the mixed up ones, just made an impulsive permanent decision. You never forget them whether they were good or bad, it is what it is. You know the drill .... Suck it up and drive on, what's done is done.

Still have a drink and do a "Roll Call" for him in your head, and find something good to remember him by and then lock it away forever.

People die, period.

What they say about finding peace and all that stuff before you die, are just words of being selfish, you find peace for yourself, it is only about yourself, because a lot live normal life, thousands of humans die everyday without the opportunity to find peace or to prepare for it, for all short of reasons.

Life is only a part of a journey, for some it is not even part of the journey, just a glance and puff they gone.

And everything is imprinted into our dna, to not feel indifferent about death for others or close to us after a while, because it is defense for living, imprinted into us.

It is funny and very lonely the path of life for all. Even if most have not realized it until it is too late, cause then not only you can't find peace, but fear assimilates you whilst darkness is covering your mortal path.

Practically to summarize, you knew him, he did not treat you right, but now that he killed himself which is different than to just die actually, you are feeling empty on what you should feel about, because you feel from inside that every dead deserves respect, as we all will die at some point.

See it as a game, when a good opponent is defeated, depending of the time you had spent with him, you could feel empty for a while, like everything now is starting from zero, maybe it is one less opponent that knew you, so had something to say about you, at the end if you are the only one left, who is to remember you, even for a while, as a thought even if it passes and go.

So, you remembered him. :), that is enough, now move on.

The same goes for a bad opponent, to a less degree of course for different reasons perhaps but still it is them, that think of us after death that makes us stay alive.

Re: An old co-worker... A Sergeant of mine, just killed himself.
Suicide is so fascinating and brave yet selfish at the same time
