Religious folk defy lockdown in Romanian city

A religious ceremony took place yesterday in Iasi, Romania.

It's a big annual event for pilgrims from all over the country.

But this year authorities said only 500 people from Iasi itself will be allowed to attend the event, and with strict rules (masks, distancing).

But around 10,000 pilgrims from all over the country defied the lockdown and went to Iasi, overwhelming the police deployed at the cathedral.

After tense moments, police gave up trying to enforce the restrictions. People were allowed to do as they pleased. No masks, no distancing.



Government officials are pissed. They've started over 20 legal actions against police officers who didn't enforce the orders.
