The seismic waves began roughly 15 miles off the shores of Mayotte, a French island sandwiched between Africa and the northern tip of Madagascar. The waves buzzed across Africa, ringing sensors in Zambia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. They traversed vast oceans, humming across Chile, New Zealand, Canada, and even Hawaii nearly 11,000 miles away. [link to www.news.com.au (secure)] We have monitored them on the Earthquake thread since they started that is why it rang a bell lol Xx |

My first question would be what is the cause of the fires on Kilimanjaro? I read some of the other thread, not all of it, but it seems like they think something external caused it?? Also, to add to the info here, there was that underwater/submarine volcano discovered recently, after all the heightened EQ activity in Mayotte. Here's a couple of good articles about it for anyone interested. The 2nd link also provides some good info on volcanic activity in that immediate area. Formation of a huge underwater volcano offshore the Comoros (snippet) The team identified different activity phases within the sequence of events from May 2018 to today. The initial swarm phase indicated a rapid upward movement of magma from a deep mantle reservoir more than 30 kilometres below the Earth's surface. Once an open channel had formed from the Earth's mantle to the seabed, the magma began to flow unhindered and form a new underwater volcano. A French oceanographic campaign recently confirmed the formation of the submarine volcano, whose location coincides with the reconstructed magma rise. [link to www.sciencedaily.com (secure)] Ship spies largest underwater eruption ever Last week, Marc Chaussidon, director of the Institute of Geophysics in Paris (IPGP), looked at seafloor maps from a recently concluded mission and saw a new mountain. Rising from the Indian Ocean floor between Africa and Madagascar was a giant edifice 800 meters high and 5 kilometers across. In previous maps, there had been nothing. ... [link to www.sciencemag.org (secure)] although Kilimanjaro is fairly far away, you can form a straight line from there to Mayotte, so perhaps there is some connection between all this stuff under the earth despite the distance. As OP knows, there was clearly a connection between the Hawaii volcanic activity and the activity sparked in Mayotte a few years ago, and that's halfway around the world. How that's possible I don't know, but every time the volcanic or EQ activity increased in Hawaii during Kilauea, EQ activity increased in Mayotte (and now we know there was also underwater volcanic activity going on too). And they both quieted down at the same time. |

Mount Kilimanjaro has 3 volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain in the world: 5,895 metres above sea level and about 4,900 metres above its plateau base. Xx |
