But it's still uncomfortable knowing they can get access to things. If it's that easy, no wonder celebs have problems with people posting their nudes on line. Are there any apps that shut that activity down? Adversity is inevitable, misery is optional. Do or do not. There is no try. I hit enter and it was posted before I was finished with the poll. I tried to edit, but editing the post apparently does not allow me to edit the poll questions. Sorry. Quoting: Maguyver I've used google and FB ads and this never came up. Thanks!! The advertisers do not pay for this as if it's additional option. Google gets paid more for ads that are clicked on than ads that are just displayed, so it is Google displaying the pertinent ads because you are more likely to click on ad relevant to you at the time than some random ad, thereby making Google more money. There are apps that can do all of that for you regardless of your phone mode. You can also flash the phone with a custom ROM and get rid of all of Samsung's pre-installed crap. Anyone truly concerned about privacy with their phone, this should the very first thing they do when they purchase a new phone. There are instructions on how to do this for just about every phone model out there, but if you're not technically inclined, you should be able to find a local phone repair store willing to do it for you. Always use your browse in incognito mode to prevent some of the tracking it does. Personally, all of my personal devices have firewalls, including my phone, that allow me to control what information travels in and out. But firewalls require some basic knowledge on how Internet traffic works so you know what to block and what to allow through. Quoting: MaybeTrollingUAgain If using an unsecured network port like port 80, then yes you are correct. Traffic going out over port 443 is encrypted point to point. Granted, it's possible the NSA has compromised all the companies that issue SSL certificates so that they can read the traffic, but private companies do not have that capability. Bottom line is yes, you are correct that if you want to use the Internet you are at risk for having your data exploited. As a mentor of mine once said, "The only true secure computer is one that is turned off, unplugged, and locked in a safe, and even then you can't be 100% sure." This thread is about mitigating and minimizing that risk, not eliminating it. If you want 100% privacy and security you would have to drop completely off the grid. That's a different subject. Quoting: Maguyver Are there any apps that shut that activity down? A firewall is your best protection on a phone. But as stated earlier, that requires some basic networking knowledge. Encryption is your second best option, keeping all data on your phone encrypted unless you're actively using it. But you need to do your research and be careful what encryption technology you install. Avoid proprietary software and look for open-source software. It's a lot harder for a company to hide vulnerabilities - deliberate or otherwise - if their source code is available for everyone to look at. (OP) DEFCON 4 User ID: 52530071 United States 10/03/2020 08:40 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Encryption algorithms can be cracked and therefore are no guarantee of anything. Weak encryption algorithms can be cracked. More likely is an encryption program put out there that is either written by the government directly or through a contractor that provides them with the encryption keys. If you do your research and are selective about what encryption software you use, then your data is much more secure. There are documented cases of encryption being used by drug dealers that the government could not crack. Currently, their way around that is to have a court issue an order for the suspect to reveal their encryption password and if they refuse, they can be held indefinitely until the do. But this is being challenged as a violation of the 4th and 5th Amendments by the ACLU. This is why some American politicians are pushing for encryption software to made illegal for civilians to possess. They are aware of the danger it presents to their ability to monitor American citizens. Am I sure "turning the listening feature off is %100? No. I'm not. Good choice. Alexa without the listening feature enabled is just an expensive paperweight. My voice assistant app is not only disabled on my phone, my firewall is configured to block any network traffic in or out from that app. However, according to my firewall logs, that app has made no network connection attempts while disabled. Generally speaking, the Android operating system is safer than iOS where privacy is concerned. It's the individual Android apps that cause privacy and security problems, not the operating system.
