homes. I know we can't just expect the government to have a pretty rooms available for you at the local Hilton when your house goes up in flames, but cant someone come up with a better end than just sleeping in your car with your wife and two kids. Okay, obviously no one has come up with a better solution. I'm going to bed. Someone, work on this plan please

Hmm.. any word on whether there has been a grassroots movement on Craigslist or anywhere yet, to offer up spare guest rooms to some of the displaced families? a-la Katrina?

that might be a good place to start.

In any fire prone disater area it would make sense to have a bolt hole stocked with clean water, heat, blankets and basic foods to return to when the flames go out. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - just a starting point from which to re-build.

Many of these people (not all) would have been rich enough to take this elementary precaution. Whilst I do have some sympathy for folk who have lost everything I refuse to shed crocodile tears for the irresponsible who had fancy possessions in a house of sticks.

Trin's bunker may be a bit over the top but he aint totally stupid. TSHTF in all sorts of ways when you least expect it.

At times like these you pack up and move in with relatives. It's their privilege and their responsibility to help you out in hard times.

From riches to rags
sleeping in the car would not be much fun

One small mercy is most of the smoke from these fires is heading out into the pacific, and not over Los Angeles.

Hasn't anyone learned anything by now? DO NOT expect the world to help you in the event of a disaster. You got to have your own plan.

There are over 30 evacuation centers open already in San Diego, and if more are needed, they WILL open more!

Yes, THAT has also happened, and even for pets (90% of the pets community is now devoted to housing evaced pets)...

Haven't you people learned yet that you are on your own?! You really think that someone else should take care of you?!?!

"Oh help me... I am too stupid to think for myself...please tell me where to go and what to do..."

If you didn't learn after watching the crap in New Orleans, I guess that you will never learn!

To everyone with a country home-

An ideal shelter would be a underground tunnel from a room in your home, to a room dug out next to the city's water supply line and connected to the electric lines from your house, for which you already pay for the electric, on your side of the meter. Eventually fill in the tunnel to the house or trap door the tunnel and use another entrance that comes out elsewhere, also hidden. There's noting illegal about adding a new room, while living in the country with no zoning.

It has five "Bloodmobiles" at the stadium as part of an effort to increase supplies. Coordinators at Qualcomm Stadium say they are also in need of latex gloves, baby wipes, size one and two diapers, non-electric can openers, tooth brushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and soap.

The Salvation Army Kroc Center is also accepting donations. They especially need rakes, shovels, sifting tools and other items that will aid in fire-recovery efforts. The center also needs toiletries, hand lotion, lip balm, eyewash kits, sanitary supplies, tooth brushes and paste, combs, hair brushes and razors. Donated items can be dropped off at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 6845 University Ave.
