Dilema, work related. What would you do?
I am part of a large project. A guy was appointed team leader who does not have my credentials or experience. His technique is not up to my standards and it is reflected in the data. He thinks he is all that. He is a go getter is good at calling people, gathering supplies, and running errands.

We are putting the data into an Excel spreadsheet to see if it passes. He knows more than I do about using Excel, but, he doesn't understand the input and formulas and why the data is failing. I can look at the data and results and know how to fix it.

I watched him stare at the computer screen for 2 hours trying to fix a graph where the formula for the graph was corrupted. He was trying to copy and paste the graph from a similar spreadsheet. How is that going to work?

I have repeatedly told my boss that the guy is messing up right and left and doesn't understand what he is doing. Some things he has picked up but he is still sloppy and messy ( and he scratches himself in front of me. Today he actually put his hand in his pants. I averted my eyes.)

The boss has made it clear that this guy is the lead. He will get the credit though I fixed the data.

Would you continue to help him clean up and correct the data so the tests will pass? Or would you just sit around and leave early like everyone else is doing. (It is not their project and they are not on this team.)

Today, they were telling him to make dilutions on some samples. Later, he got distracted staring at the computer screen and talking to his girlfriend. I had to call his attention back to the gameplan. He has started asking others to help him make the dilutions myself included. We are creating fake points that we will measure and we do not have to calculate the quantity present by our dilution factor. All you have to do is mix a few things together so you will get a variation. Maybe I should tell him that?

Thing is, they were pointedly giving him the direction and they excluded me though I was standing right there and am part if the group. Should I be offended? I am offended. He is a man and I am a woman. He is black and I am white.

So I am asking, would you help him fix the data though he is the one who will get credit for it.

Unfortunately you have to be extremely Machiavellian in Corporate America, so go full bore. Sometimes you have to treat the monkeys in front of you like stair steps. No room for emotion.

Weigh it out from every option you can think of, and pick the most devious and simple plan that puts this incompetent fuck on the street, or pack your shit.

Uhm, I only need to work a few hours tomorrow and I have my 40 in. Sounds like I am going home for lunch and not coming back. Oh, I did tell the boss I would be more than happy to drive back home through the mountains in a few weeks if he wanted to release me from my contract.

Sounds like we are on the same page.

yeah go full machi on him.you have the extra time to psycho analyze him since your input is worthless.
let him crash and burn,go around your boss and grab the same contract and offer to supply real results.
its a dog eat dog world.in the past ive seen many a contractor get iced by a smarter employee than the boss.
its a risky maneuver but it can work if you get the right contact.
it could be the contract supplier wants rigged numbers.
ive seen that too.

Re: Dilema, work related. What would you do?
Just from a logical standpoint---

you're wrong!

and you're right!

I'll tell you why you should be
acutely aware of office politics and how they play out
in your office. (I'm just guessing here.)

You may be gambling on this equation---

You: If I don't help him and others above us see this
mess, they will realize they made a mistake on putting
him in charge. Maybe they'll ask me to take over.
(Some thing like this, maybe?)

Here's the problem with that equation, they're going to
blame YOU!
You just don't see it.

They put him in charge for, let's just call it---reparations.

How do I arrive at this? Lack of qualifications.
And don't tell me they don't know your abilities,
they hired you on them.

Knowing he was less than what was actually needed,
they put you IN THIS EQUATION to get the outcome they
wanted while the visual says, "we are diverse", the outcome
will be other workers (yourself) will be involved to
assure that it is completed correctly.
But he gets the credit. Seen it, been there, done that!

When it turns out bad or becomes an issue, they are going to
look at you and ask you, "Did you help him?".

If they see you withheld helping your associate you will
be viewed as 'not a team player'.

Better wake up to the diversity before it hurts your career.
It'll hurt your feelings totally. (I've felt it myself!)
But realize you need a stable job and it's fine to
be tolerant of something that provides you a gracious
living.

Try to let thing's go. Trust me, its not worth it if you
can tolerate working there for other reasons.
Don't let this B.S. get you bitter, just get better.

My $0.02

Hope all works out...

You are pretending like what you do for a corpocracy matters. It only matters in how long you can stay there and make money and use the benefits. If you want to contribute to humanity, you create. If you can make a living being a cog so that it gives you time and money to create, you have a winner.

If you are caught up in all of this nonsense of being a corporate slave, you have a loser.

Re: Dilema, work related. What would you do?
I worked on business teams for years in business planning and strategic planning. The people I have seen be most successful have high emotional intelligence. They mesh well with others, give other people praise and recognition, assist in achieving team goals, shmooze the boss with appropriate friendliness, and know all the latest pop stars, tv shows, and sports teams for the Monday morning watercooler. They (act like they) care about your kids, barbecue party, ski trip, etc., and engage with the group in an interested way.

Don't worry so much about taking credit for actual work. You can gain more credit from making your boss feel good about themselves and their team than you can from running your own flag up the pole all the time. Nobody but NOBODY likes a self aggrandizing know-it-all.

Be kind and friendly and you will ultimately be deeply respected. There will always be cruel backstabbers at work but you will get much more respect throughout your organization by being a decent and helpful human being. You will sleep better at night and your work will be less stressful.

If you have strong career ambitions, fulfill them by befriending the shot callers. "It's not what you know, it's who you know."

Re: Dilema, work related. What would you do?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Start looking for a new job if possible.

The reality is, if he fails, you will get some of the blame, as he is a corporate investment to fulfill affirmative action bullshit. If he succeeds, the chances are slim that he or the corporation will remember you.

But if he does succeed, he may get promoted and you can go after his current position as a "team player". Try and keep your options open as he isn't a real candidate, more like a corporate pet.

If you can, try and talk with the boss above the team leader, and merely ask about the long term corporate investment in this individual. If this individual will be fast tracked for promotion, what chances you have of filling the void left behind as he rides up the ranks.

That would show your both a team player, and have an understanding of reality that is beneficial to the corporation.

Granted, you have to communicate that in a way that is politically correct. It also gives you bargaining power as your effectively saying "I will help this person succeed, as long as I have some incentive to do so".

All other advice aside. It is a TEAM EFFORT. If he fails you fail. Oh sure they will recognize his shortcomings...as well as yours.

Good luck in your abandonment of your team as it speaks volumes of your knowledge & abilities.

Don't you think they know who is capable of what?

A fail on your resume is a fail, even with your self applied asterisk.

What future boss wants to hire a "I know more than the boss but won't help team member"?

Been playing corporate long? Good luck.

Without more to go on, sounds like an affirmative action hire and the guy will never suffer any consequences. Your boss's reaction pretty much sealed the deal.

Companies have to meet unrealistic "diversity" quotas or be bullied by the Leftist mafia.

I personally would be looking for another job, sounds like you are pretty smart and would be an asset somewhere else.

And once I found one, I'd just say "good luck with that" to the boss and quit.

Motherfucking this!

Why do people who abhore the mentality and behavior of hogs, rats, and snakes insist on assuming that very mentality and behavior in order to "win"

You're ultimately just subverting your own integrity and self-interest, sabotaging any potential chance of true success and happiness (the luciferian control freaks and their reptiallian overlords absolutely love this. It's why we have a "corporate culture" at all in the first place)

These things are crosscultural, supranational, and timeless laws of nature. As constant as terminal velocity, as immuntable as the freezing temp of water. Take 'em to the bank.

DO help!

But only if told exactly what it is they need you to do.
If they want you to problem solve his job. Then just keep kicking it back to him.

What do you want me to do here? Etc.

IF nothing is told specifically, then do your job as expected and keep your head low.

Most importantly, he's the boss, so if you antagonize him, it's your job that's at risk.

Wow, thanks for all the advice. As it turns out, I got busy with something else Friday and was not able to help much. The bosses are really on his case because he hasn't gotten this done. I kinda feel sorry for him and won't want to be in his shoes. I helped him a little in the afternoon.

I don't know if they are going to accept the data we piecemealed together to make it work.

I spoke with my boss. I have decided that perhaps I confused leadership with expertise. I have the expertise. I decided to step back to see if the "leader" can step up.

He is scheduled to go to another area this week doing something even more complicated but he won't be the team leader. I can't wait to watch that show!

My goal is retirement not climbing the ladder, with hopes of getting another contract job with the company in the future. I am really not trying to impress anyone. I just have problems watching a cluster $<"* going on in a project that I am part if.
