Second hand account of Yugoslavian civil war and comparison to USA, NOT Selco

Recently, I was fortunate to speak to a gentleman that survived the civil war in the former Yugoslavia. After being introduced and learning my background, he asked "Do you think the US is going to have a civil war?", after hearing my reply, he stated "Unfortunately, I think we will see another civil war here and it will be like it was where I am from. There wont be front lines, it will be neighbors against neighbors, families will turn on each other. It will be horrible and it saddens me. I love America! The people that are trying to destroy the country need to be punished. They are using the same tactics they used in Yugoslavia."
In the interest of brevity, I will summarize his statements:

1) It all started the same way, for example, identity politics, driving wedges, destroying history.

2) No one, including him, thought the political turmoil would lead to war until the day it happened. He admits he, and others he knew, had the mindset of it will be worked out. Why would they attack us? Our families are intermarried, we work together, etc.

3) When the violence started, it happened fast and caught them by surprise.

4) Guns were illegal, so many fought their first battles with axes, hatchets, etc. They would get close and kill an enemy soldier and take his weapon and gear.

5) Ammunition was scarce.

6) Food was scarce. The town he was from was primarily agricultural, they were farmers, and he stressed that food was still in short supply. He said "Americans are not prepared for being truly hungry. Very few here can grow their own food, have livestock. We could and we still went hungry."

7) Medical supplies of all sorts were scarce.

His advice is to take the threat of civil war seriously, right now, and prepare your families for that possibility.

Form defensive groups now. He stated there were those over there, like the ones here, that said they will defend their homes when the threat comes. He said that by the time the threat is at your door, its too late, you will be killed. A single man, a single family (4-5 people) can't hold off the large groups. His words were "Form defensive groups and meet the threat away from your homes. People must organize now. Once the shooting starts, it's too late."

I am meeting with him again soon and hope to learn more from his first hand experiences. I will share when I do.

At no point did he advocate offensive actions or anything thing that could be construed as terroristic. He kept stressing the need for protecting your families and neighborhoods, etc. from those out perpetrating the violence.

Aside from continually prepping, I also hope and pray that the communist insurrectionist will be prosecuted for the traitors they are and that our nation can return to the path of freedom without bloodshed. Until then, hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

More to come.

I am familiar with what you are talking about, but that has little to do with the similarities to the current political and social powder keg we are sitting on today.

He was addressing how things are very similar here to how things were immediately before hostilities began there. Did the things that happened 50 or so years before the Balkans civil war contribute to that? I have no doubt.

This thread is addressing what happened in the few months that led up to hostilities and what happened afterwards. If you persist in trying to derail, you will be deleted and banned.

I'm sure there are somewhere, but this is his personal account of what happened. Maybe you could find an example and make a thread about it?
With everyone being so well armed to begin with, I imagine it will be a much bloodier opening act. Its much easier to shoot someone than it is to hack away at them with and edged weapon.

A question for your friend. You report that he said:
"2) No one, including him, thought the political turmoil would lead to war until the day it happened..."

Question: How did he know that it in fact, "happened"
surely there was no news broadcast to state "we are now at civil war" So, what was the first day like?

To add, here is an incredible video of a Yugoslavian woman explaining exactly what you reported, and more. Very good, highly recommend watching

yea well no shit sherlocks, first check out how the world, UN imposed sanctions and weapons embargo on the countries, republics in the Yugoslavian state

so the world basically gave free hands to the Serbs, to commit worst crimes against humanity in Croatia and Bosnia

Croatia, Bosnia, welcome end of UN arms ban
Thu, Jun 20, 1996, 01:00

CROATIA and Muslim led Bosnia, both shattered by wars with superior Serb forces after declaring independence from Yugoslavia, said yesterday the end of a UN arms embargo on the region was long overdue.

Ahh, another pathological lying Brit. Serbia was cleared of all wrongdoing, and accusations against Serbia made by British owned media outlets, has proven to be unfounded to outright lies.

Serbs were defending themselves from genocidal muslims.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79404550

wtf you're talking about delusional shizo murderous Serb

Serbian war leadership in Bosnia, got a total of over 1000 years of prison sentence in the Hague tribunal

this article was written before the total sentence

Srebrenica Prison Sentences: 699 Years and Counting

The Hague Tribunal and domestic courts have sentenced 45 people to 699 years in prison - plus three life sentences - for genocide, crimes against humanity and other offences against Bosniaks from Srebrenica in July 1995.

you should rather check and see how the world politicians were talking about the Serbs back in the day, they were all saying they're genocidal freaks

I am an advocate of Neighborhood Watch...enhanced.

It is time to contact neighbors and set up comms, e.g., walkie tallkies or CB radio so that if one is attacked, all come to the rescue. Cell phone service could be interrupted.

A large mob will lose motivation quickly if a few go down wounded. Rifle fire from a distance is hard to counter.

My wife lived and suffered through a ruinous civil war in her home country started by communist rebels.

The current situation reminds me of the Tet Offensive where the commies tried to take over the cities and failed with huge casualties. Why do they keep doing the same thing? I guess its in their marxist training manual.

We don't want that here!

Pray for peace and PREP!

I hope for the "GLP Effect" where the commies realize that the populace is ready to repel any attacks.

Be especially aware of local targets such as electrical substations, high line towers, cell towers, etc. They must be guarded.

People need to start organizing like their lives depend on it because it does.

Jesus himself told us this was coming in luke 12:53

This is not being organized by some secret group of elite masters to divide us.

Jesus said it was he that will bring the sword of division. and yes children will turn in their own parents to be executed.

Re: Second hand account of Yugoslavian civil war and comparison to USA, NOT Selco
Great post, OP. Just thought I'd share my .02, as someone who travessed through Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia over the summer last year and met various people it's the worst type of nostalgia to be experiencing this first hand in the U.S. I was in the Balkans to study the collapse of Yugoslavia, the various conflicts and post-conflict restoration over there. One of the attending professors was from Serbia, and the other was American. Looking back, I can totally see the parallel. I wonder if that professor also is a lurker here, as I did not study in the U.S yet he often encouraged us to consider the status of the U.S, especially back in 2016. After the election, we focused our studies more on nationalism and conflict. I can't help but read the current headlines for the past few months and hear his voice and lectures ring back in my head.

For what it's worth, every single person I met said they wished it was Yugoslavia again. It really seemed like the only people who wanted the divisions were the elite. The only exception of this being what happened to Bosnia, where Bosniaks really got shit on pretty much everywhere throughout the Balkans.

Anyways, thanks for a great post. hf

Rosie, those are things I will ask. We had a limited discussion, was short on time. I have an entire list of questions and will seek to clarify some information already given.

Can’t help it. Gotta plug Selco Begovic’s book: “The Dark Secrets of SHTF Survival: The Brutal Truth About Violence, Death, & Mayhem You Must Know to Survive.”

Buy it and read it. It will shatter any illusions about post SHTF romanticism.

This is one purchase I very much doubt you’ll regret.
