Doesn't matter how old, my husband will eat it.
Soups, veg, fruit from 2009.

I stock up on coffee.

We have to learn to rotate, as other
posters have said.

I'm just going to stock up on things just
to get thru this winter.

Five stars and a karma pin. Didn't see this thread until today when Gemini Rising posted it in our Practical Prepping Protocol thread, for which I am very thankful.

This is horrifying, when people have purchased these foods and stored the away, believing they will be good for twentyfive years or more, only to discover, when starving, that they have nothing to eat but spoiled food. Sickening.

How did Auguson Farms do? I'm told they are the best, but your test will mean the most. I'm still on your first page, OP, so if you have already answered this question, thank you!

Beans and rice never go bad. Orchards never go bad. Fish ponds never go bad. Wild game never goes bad. Perennial beds never go bad. Canned meat lasts for decades. Seeds last for decades if stored properly. Do it right.

whole grains (seeds) store best. A garbage can duct taped shut in a cool basement will produce sprouts years later. Sprouts may be rabbit food but 5 star survival food. Do not buy "seed" as that has poison on it for fungus and will kill you

Sugar...local organic feed mills will sell human consumption grade 50lb bags organic evaporated cane juice super cheap. Also human consumption grade rolled oats, gallon jugs of molasses. Amish and Mennonite run bulk food stores will often give you fair prices for large orders ( 25# or 50# bags of beans and grains). Look for restaurant supply warehouses too...powdered cheese, milk and eggs.
I feel that many of the prepper sites are way overpriced for the exact same foods.

Can your old dried beans in a pressure canner. Voila! Soft beans, ready to use in tacos, chili, soups, etc.

Don't forget salt..have seen big bags of Redmond salt at feed store, as well as spices - I love Penzeys for price and quality. Bulk bags available.

Truth

Flours/ milled grains spoil much faster.
Sprouted flours are more nutritious, plus cooked first so most toxins attributed to sprouting are destroyed.

I lost several cases of Auguson farms food when I checked them. Not only check on them when you put them away, perhaps check on them periodically (I didn't). Hope yours stay in good shape. Again, I live in FL, and while they've been in my care, they've been in air conditioning, but I have no idea what the warehouses looked like or postal contitions were before arrival.

If a #10 can is bulging, you know it has problems. Oh and if you open a bulging can, it's a good idea to do it outside and wear eye protection. You don't want that in your eyes. I don't even open a bulging can any more. I just throw it away.

Re: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PREPPER and PEOPLE WHO STOCKPILE COMMERCIAL FOODS FROM COMPANIES
Any way you look at it stockpiling those types of dehydrated / MRE foods is super expensive and inefficient.

Stock up. Wait. Throw away. Repeat. It is an awful emergency strategy.

You are just better off to stockpile regular keepable groceries, your own canned/preserved stuff, etc. and rotate them out of your day to day food supply.

You can easily go 2 years that way with almost no effort and at 20% of the cost.

If you are in a situation where you have to stockpile more than 2 years of food, food will ironically be the least of your worries.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74838577

Unless you go backpacking 6-8 times a year.
Actually use your shit, keep a years worth of stuff. Week long backpacking trips will teach you a lot about your bug out plan, preps, etc. If you cant last a week in the woods then when TSHTF you may as well go to the camps.
Learn how to grow and dehydrate using heat, smoke etc.
Weekend warriors buying preps on amazon will be the first ones down.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47960194

You don't have to go camping 6-8 times a year.

One method of testing your prepper strategy.

Designate a time period of 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks...

Throw the mains switch on your electrical meter to OFF.

Close the main-valve to your water supply.

You will learn quickly what your prep-status is. When you have to cook, eat, clean, flush-toilets, with no power, and no water service.

Try-it, even for a couple of days it can be a challenge.
.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 66967769

Those are great ideas and also point out another regular food supply advantage - familiarity. You know it works and how much you need because you eat it all the time.

The average person who says they are going to buy an MRE for 5x the price just throws it in the closet and has never eaten it before and has no idea what they really need.

I've just seen it too many times, stock it up for $$$$ let it sit, 75% of the time it sits and gets thrown out or given away while people were waiting for the apocalypse or the earthquake or whatever and nothing happened in that timeframe.

Re: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PREPPER and PEOPLE WHO STOCKPILE COMMERCIAL FOODS FROM COMPANIES
All the wrong processes. You don't just buy a bunch of stuff and let it sit. Bad idea.

Store what you eat. Eat what you store.

I started over 10 years ago. When I needed a can of corn, I bought two. When I used one, I'd buy two more. I lined up the cans from oldest in front, newest in back. When I would get a can off the shelf, I'd take from the front. When I went to the grocery store, I'd buy two and put them in the back. In this way I have built up a huge stock. ...and I just kept stacking. If the product started coming off the front as spoiled or tasting old, I'd mark that section for stock reduction. What I found is that you can go about 3 years past the "Best By" date on most canned goods. I keep all my stock at that point. If you're tossing out food, you're doing it wrong. I came up with this idea on my own using logical thinking and experimentation through the last 20 years.

Note: 3 things you can't store for long. You might have an extra can/jar or two but no more: mayonaise, salad dressings, shortening (except for lard, it keeps well).

All these preppers that buy all these emergency food buckets are idiots. Just buy a bag of wheat (keeps 10 years in paper bags) or corn (keeps 6 years in paper bags). Double those figures if you mylar bag and oxygen absorb them.

BTW, its simple to make your own oxygen absorbers: take find steel wool in a sheet. Salt it heavily, fold it over and put it in a little cotton bag.

Take if from experience, you're wasting your money on those fancy buckets. They'll be garbage by the time you really need them and they aren't cheap. The purpose they serve is to make you feel good and to make the company that is selling them money.

The farther away from the raw or original product a food stuff gets, the less time it keeps. Gasoline is the same way. Straight white gas (which has no additives) will keep a very long time. 10 years or more. Add anything too it and that keep time drops. Guess what! I do the same with fuel. I have two 55 gallon drumps of gasoline. In december, I empty one by starting to use it, then I refill it. Then, in july, I do the other one. The gas in there is never more than a year old. YOu can stretch that out to a year if you need to, especially if you have stable, cold temps.

Prep up, people! You're gonna need it.

Not being the least bit religious, but I was wondering the other day how they stored grains in the BC era. I was thinking about the old story where Joseph had a dream about a famine and they stored grains for 7 years in preparation of the famine and saved the people. What all did they store, how did they store it and how much did they store to save so many people?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67789290

I'm a good Catholic. Joseph interpreted the Pharaoh's dream. There would be 7 excellent harvests then 7 years of drought. So Pharaoh had food stored during the good years. I think it was mostly grains and Egypt grew wheat mostly. They stored things off the ground in a mud brick thing I have no idea what is called. Its about ten feet by ten feet by ten feet high. He would have had row after row of these things. They ate a lot of bread back then.
 Quoting: Doctor Congo

They had real bread then.
Not the shit we call bread today.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79389046

I did an experiment with commercial bread lately. Evidently it lasts indefinitely now. I kept it 4 months past expiration AND THE SHIT DIDNT MOLD. The last month I left the bag open...still no mold. Tortillas, same same.
Havn't eaten store-bought bread since.
 Quoting: wingnut1234

I think you are right! I remember when I was a kid, bread would mold in just a couple of days. I used to have to keep it in the freezer or fridge. I did this into adulthood. Then hubs HATED it, so I quit doing it. He used to eat a loaf in very short time, so he either had to eat a loaf quickly or I threw out half loaves of moldy bread.

Now, seems like bread can stay on the counter and never mold! Maybe not “never” but long enough for us to use up a whole loaf.

Other comment I wanted to make to the person who asked about the storehouses and Joseph and the grain: remember, they are in a desert area. NO HUMIDITY! Not much to “mold the food.”
